Why appeal only to the public? IPL teams’ flights are burning thousands of liters of fuel every day

Due to Iran war and increasing tension in the Strait of Hormuz, economic uncertainty is continuously increasing around the world. In such difficult times, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to the countrymen to save petrol and diesel and use resources responsibly. Meanwhile, questions are being raised regarding IPL 2026 that when the country is going through a crisis and people are being asked to save fuel, then why is such a huge amount of fuel being spent for IPL matches?

Now businessmen and environmental organizations are raising questions as to why IPL matches are not being held at limited venues. On this issue, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) even said that IPL matches should be held in empty stadiums and at limited venues. In such a situation, it becomes important to know how many liters of fuel is being spent every day in the flights of IPL teams.

IPL teams’ flights are burning thousands of liters of fuel every day

Players and team management usually travel on chartered flights, using aircraft such as Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. These planes consume about 2,500 to 3,200 liters of fuel every hour. That means if the flight is about 2 hours then an aircraft burns about 5,000 to 6,000 liters of fuel. In IPL or VIP charter flights, sometimes the aircraft fly with empty seats, due to which the fuel consumption per passenger is considered to be even higher. In such a situation, if an IPL team is going from one venue to another to play in a match, then the plane burns about 6,000 liters of fuel.

How many liters of fuel will the planes use till the final match?

On May 10, the Prime Minister had appealed to the countrymen to save petrol and diesel and use resources responsibly. After this, 9 IPL matches have been played from May 11 to May 18. Now a total of 11 matches are left till the final.

If we look at the air travel calculations of the teams, a total of 16 flights can be used including the travel of 10 teams before the playoffs, the travel of 4 teams reaching the playoffs and the flights of 2 teams playing the finals. It is believed that if a flight of about 2 hours is slightly larger than a chartered plane or is flying with more weight for a longer distance, then about 7 thousand liters of fuel is spent. In such a situation, a total of about 1,12,000 liters (1.12 lakh litres) of flight fuel is estimated to be spent in all these journeys till the IPL final.

What appeal did Prime Minister Narendra Modi make?

It is worth noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently made seven major appeals to the countrymen amid the global situation and uncertainty. The most discussed among these was the appeal to promote work from home. The PM asked companies and employees to adopt the habit of working from home as far as possible, so that daily fuel consumption is reduced and traffic jams are also relieved.

India imports about 80 percent of its crude oil requirement from Gulf countries. In such a situation, it is considered extremely important to save every drop of fuel in the interest of the country. For this reason, questions are now being raised regarding the heavy air travel and fuel expenditure during IPL.
