According to the United Nations, about 4.7 million people in the country are on the verge of starvation. This is more than 10% of the total population of Afghanistan.

The situation is especially bad in Ghor province. Every morning, hundreds of people stand on the roadside looking for work. But, most of them do not get work. According to a BBC report, 45-year-old Juma Khan said that he has got work only for three days in the last one and a half month. He said that his children slept hungry for three consecutive nights. He had to borrow money from his neighbor to buy flour.

Laborer Rabani said that when he came to know that his children were hungry for two days, he felt that there was no point in living. Meanwhile, elderly Khawaja Ahmed tearfully said that due to his age no one gives him work and his family is dying of hunger. When stale bread is distributed in a nearby bakery, people rush to buy it. Dozens of people chase a man who has come to provide work to a labourer.

The situation is even worse in villages. Abdul Rashid Azimi said that he is ready to sell his 7-year-old twin daughters. He cried and said that he did not have enough food to feed them. His wife said that the family sometimes survives only on bread and hot water.

What is the reason for the crisis in Afghanistan?

Earlier, millions of people in Afghanistan used to get food assistance from abroad. They were given flour, oil, pulses and food items for children. But now, many countries including America have significantly reduced the aid. According to the United Nations, there has been a 70% decrease in foreign aid this year as compared to 2025. Drought, unemployment and inflation have made the situation worse.

The number of malnourished children in hospitals is increasing rapidly. Many new born babies are having trouble breathing. Doctors say that poverty and lack of medicines are causing increase in the cases of deaths of children. Many families cannot afford treatment, so they have to take sick children home from the hospital. Doctors and nurses say that many children are dying every day, and the situation is continuously worsening.
