What is a Cat A Qualified Flying Instructor?
The Indian Air Force divides the capability of its pilot instructors into different categories. Cat-C is the entry level for trainee or probationary instructors. This is followed by Cat-B, which includes instructors who provide general flying training, but Cat-A is considered the highest level of this entire system. Pilots who achieve this rating can train not only new pilots but also other flying instructors. They are given the responsibility of testing advanced flying skills and preparing pilots for air combat.

Such instructors will prepare new generation fighter pilots
The role of Cat-A QFI is considered very important. Such instructors train young pilots and correct their mistakes. Building their confidence and preparing them for complex air combat skills. This role requires not only excellent flying skills but also patience, technical understanding, clear decision-making and mental balance. This is why Cat-A rating is considered very prestigious in the IAF.
Commission was done in 2015
According to public records, Squadron Leader Sanya was commissioned in the flying branch of the Indian Air Force through 42 SSC (W) FP Course on June 20, 2015. He was promoted to flight lieutenant in 2017 and then to squadron leader in 2021. In the last 10 years, he has proven himself as an excellent transport pilot.
Big milestone for women
This is the first time in the 93-year history of the IAF that a woman officer has achieved Cat-A QFI rating. This is being considered a big sign of increasing participation of women in the Indian Air Force. Today women officers are flying fighter jets. Helicopter units are taking over. She is doing flight testing and is also seen in command roles. Now women are making their strong presence felt even in the most difficult areas like flying instruction.
Another big achievement after Shivangi Singh
This achievement comes at a time when, just a few months ago, Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh became India’s first woman fighter pilot to earn the QFI badge. She had completed a rigorous six-month course at the Flying Instructors’ School in Tambaram, Tamil Nadu. Although earlier women transport and helicopter pilots had received the QFI badge, Sanya has become the first woman officer to achieve Cat-A rating.
The picture of Indian Army is changing
In the 1990s, the Indian Army started inducting women through Short Service Commission. At that time the role of women was considered limited, but now the picture has completely changed. Today women are flying fighter planes. Deployed on warships. Frontline units are taking charge. They are getting permanent commission and are also taking training in prestigious military academies like NDA. Although some combat positions of tank and infantry in the Indian Army are still not open to women, but steps are being taken towards change.
Sanya became an inspiration for the girls of the country
This achievement of Squadron Leader Sanya is not just a military record. It is an inspiration for millions of girls who dream big and want to move forward on difficult paths. The Indian Air Force also said that Sanya’s success would serve as a source of inspiration for aviators of future generations.
