Re-polling today on Falta assembly seat of West Bengal, roaring Jahangir out of the election, competition between BJP and Congress.

Tezzbuzz Desk- Phalta assembly seat of South 24 Parganas district, which was once considered a strong stronghold of Trinamool Congress in the politics of West Bengal, has now become the center of completely changing political equations. Within just 15 days of the fall of the TMC government in the 2026 assembly elections, the party’s hold on the party seems to be weakening. The situation has changed so much that TMC candidate Jahangir Khan, who presented a strong claim before the elections, himself left the election field.

Re-polling is being held on Phalta assembly seat on Thursday. This time the contest is mainly being considered between BJP candidate Debangshu Panda and Congress candidate Abdur Razzaq Mollah. Apart from this, CPI(M)’s Shambhunath Kurmi, independent candidates Deep Hati and Chandrakant Rai are also in the fray.

Following complaints of alleged rigging and violence during voting on April 29, the Election Commission had decided to cancel the Phalta seat election and hold re-polling. Voting will be held from 7 am to 6 pm on Thursday, while the counting of votes will be done on May 24. The most talked about in political circles is about the sudden withdrawal of TMC candidate Jahangir Khan from the election. In the press conference held on Tuesday, he announced that he will not contest the elections and said that his priority is to carry forward the development works in the area through the special package announced by the state government for Falta. However, political analysts are considering this as a sign of TMC’s internal weakness and the changing political environment.

Jahangir Khan has been considered a close supporter of Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee. In such a situation, his leaving the field is also being seen as a big political setback for Abhishek Banerjee. Especially because TMC had been continuously claiming political edge in the last few years regarding the Diamond Harbor model.

Abhishek Banerjee had won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Diamond Harbor seat by a record margin of more than 7 lakh votes. In the 2021 assembly elections, his lead in the same area was about 40 thousand votes, which increased to more than 1 lakh 68 thousand by 2024. But now the TMC candidate quitting the election in the same area is pointing towards the weakening organizational structure of the party.

According to sources, Jahangir Khan had tried to contact Abhishek Banerjee before withdrawing from the election, but the conversation could not take place. After this he independently decided to withdraw from the election. It is being told that for the last one week, the activity of TMC leadership was almost absent in Phalta, while BJP was in the election field with full strength.

The Falta by-election is no longer just a contest for one assembly seat, but it is being considered as the election that will decide the changing politics of Bengal and the future direction of TMC. If the BJP wins here, its number of seats in the assembly could increase to 208, which would signal a new balance of power in the state’s politics.
