While India has not yet reported a single case of Ebola, it is a relief, but as a precautionary measure, the administration has been given strict instructions to strictly follow the rules.

More than 130 dead in Africa

The Ebola virus is currently spreading rapidly in countries in Central and West Africa. The disease has so far killed more than 130 people and infected more than 500 in the countries of Congo, Uganda, Sudan, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Due to this, the Indian government has started thorough screening of passengers coming to India directly or through other routes, especially from Congo, Uganda and South Sudan at the airport itself.

Instructions to take immediate action as soon as symptoms appear

According to the Centre’s guidelines, if passengers arriving from affected countries show any symptoms of infection, they are required to immediately inform the help desk or health authorities at the airport before the immigration check. In addition, any traveler who has unknowingly come into contact with an Ebola patient is required to notify the Health Department on their own. The Ministry of Health has warned that if Ebola is not taken seriously, a dangerous situation like Corona epidemic may arise.

High Level Meeting of Union Health Secretaries; Issue of SOP to States

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava called a high-level meeting of all states and Union Territories. In this meeting, the states have been asked to be ready to fight any possible crisis, and the central government has also assigned a special SOP (Standard Operating Procedure). This SOP mainly covers the following:

  • Strict screening and inspection of international passengers.
  • Quarantine Protocol for suspected patients.
  • Case Management and Immediate Referral System.
  • Special tests in laboratories (Lab Testing).

What are the main symptoms of Ebola virus?

Ebola is a life-threatening zoonotic (spread from animals to humans) virus of the ‘Orthoebolavirus’ family. In case of infection, the following symptoms appear in the body:

  • High fever, extreme weakness and fatigue.
  • Headache, sore throat, muscle and joint pain.
  • Vomiting and diarrhea.
  • The most dangerous symptom: Bleeding starts suddenly from the internal and external organs of the body, which is considered the most dangerous symptom of this disease.
