Demonstration of girl students in women’s hostel of Delhi University, allegation of forcibly vacating the hostel.
Delhi University ( Delhi University) The protest by girl students intensified late Thursday night at the University Hostel for Women (UHW). A large number of girl students sat on strike outside the hostel premises from around 9:30 pm and raised slogans against the administration. The protesting girl students allege that the hostel administration is pressurizing them to vacate the hostel forcibly. According to the students, many such actions have been taken by the administration, which are affecting their studies and examination preparation. The students alleged that water supply was stopped in the hostel, chairs were removed from the reading room and additional fees were also being imposed.
They say that they are facing a lot of trouble due to such arrangements at the time of examinations. The protesting girl students have demanded that the administration should reconsider the decision to vacate the hostel and the basic facilities of the students should be restored immediately. The students say that their protest will continue until their demands are met. According to the protesting students, at present many students are busy preparing for semester exams and NET. At such a critical time, the administration stopped water supply in two blocks of the hostel, due to which the situation has become more serious. The students say that due to the closure of water supply in the scorching heat of Delhi, problems in both living and studies have increased. The protesting girl students say that the decision to suddenly vacate the hostel in the month of May is unfair, because many girl students have already deposited the fees for June and July. In such a situation, the instruction to vacate the hostel in the middle of the session is creating difficulties for the students both mentally and financially.
Controversy increased regarding additional fees
According to the protesting students, on May 16 also they had protested against the eviction of the hostel and lack of basic facilities. At that time, the provost of the hostel had verbally assured the girl students that the facilities would be restored and the period of stay in the hostel would be extended. However, the girl students allege that later the administration issued a new order, under which an additional fee of Rs 450 per day was imposed on the girl students who stayed in the hostel beyond the stipulated time. After this decision, the resentment among the girl students has increased further.
AISA came in support of girl students
Amidst the protests by girl students, All India Students Association has also opened a front against the hostel administration. The students’ organization has alleged that the girl students have been “harassed to the extreme” due to administrative actions in the last one week. AISA, in its statement, claimed that water supply was cut off in parts of two hostel blocks. Apart from this, chairs were also removed from the common reading room, which is affecting the preparation of girl students for exams and competitive exams like NET.
The student organization alleges that despite the hostel fees for June and July having already been deposited, the administration is running a campaign to forcibly vacate the hostel. The organization said that this step amounts to putting unnecessary mental and financial pressure on the students. AISA described the administration’s action as “senseless”, saying such behavior crosses all limits of human dignity. The organization demanded that basic facilities should be immediately provided to the girl students and they should be allowed to stay in the hostel till the examination period.
The student organization claims that after the protest on May 16, the hostel warden had given verbal assurance to the girl students about restoring the facilities and extending the time limit of staying in the hostel. However, AISA alleges that the administration later went back on its word and instead issued a “punitive recovery order”. According to the organization, under this order, an additional fee of Rs 450 per day was asked from the girl students who stayed in UHW beyond the stipulated period. The students say that this decision is an attempt to put financial pressure on them to vacate the hostel, whereas many students have already deposited the fees till June and July.
AISA alleged that recently water supply was stopped in some parts of the hostel and chairs were also removed from the common reading room, due to which the girl students preparing for exams and NET are facing serious problems. During the protest, the student organization put forward several demands, including immediate resignation of the hostel warden, restoration of 24-hour water supply and extension of time limit for hostel stay without any penalty.
Warden’s resignation sought
AISA said in its statement, “AISA stands strongly with the protesting girl students and demands immediate resignation of the UHW warden, a concrete written guarantee of restoration of 24X7 water supply and unconditional extension of the hostel stay period without any penalty.” The student organization says that lack of basic facilities in the hostels, interruption in water supply and disruption of facilities like reading rooms are directly affecting the examination and NET preparation of the girl students. AISA has alleged that the decisions taken by the administration amount to pressurizing the girl students and should be immediately withdrawn. The organization also said that the girl students’ agitation will continue until their demands are met.
