Virender Sehwag declares moral victory for RCB despite SRH setback

Former India opener Virender Sehwag believes that Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last league-stage match in IPL 2026, but achieved a moral victory by finishing as the No. 1 team in the standings. Chasing 256, the defending champions managed 200 for 4 in 20 overs. Sehwag opined on RCB’s defeat, saying the Rajat Patidar-led franchise achieved what they wanted.

Sehwag mentioned that a top finish is a big advantage for RCB because it gives them two chances to reach the finals. He noted that if Bengaluru has another bad day at the office like Hyderabad, the format ensures they get two opportunities to reach the mega final.

According to the legendary opener, RCB knew that chasing 256 for the outright win was not easy. However, he lauded the franchise’s approach to prefer number one seeding over victory.

Sehwag also spoke about Virat Kohli’s innings, explaining that his batting style was practical. Sehwag noted that if RCB had gone after the bowlers from the start, they would have been in danger of being dismissed below 170, which would have impacted their top position. They focused on reaching 160  and 170. Sehwag feels that there are situations when, even in defeat, you end up winning.

Sehwag is backing RCB to win the title, saying the venues for the next round will suit their style of play. He heaped praise on the players and the team management for playing as a unit and dominating the league stage.

With Jacob Bethell injured and Phil Salt’s availability not confirmed, Royal Challengers Bengaluru opened with Venkatesh Iyer in the SRH vs RCB match. Iyer, who has been warming the bench in the 19th season, managed 44 runs in 19 balls, providing a blistering start.

Iyer’s contribution has given the side another option in case they want to stick with the same combination in the playoffs.
