Vinesh Phogat: Delhi High Court has given big relief to Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat. The court has allowed him to participate in the selection trials for the upcoming Asian Games 2026. The court raised questions on the selection policy and functioning of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and directed that sports organizations should work in the interest of the players and the game, and not out of vendetta.

What is the matter?

Indian Wrestling Federation had issued a show cause notice to Vinesh Phogat. Vinesh was accused of indiscipline and violation of anti-doping rules. The Wrestling Federation had claimed that after retirement, it is necessary to give six months’ notice to return. But Vinesh did not do this. However Vinesh challenged this decision in Delhi High Court. Now the High Court has allowed him to participate in the Asian Games selection trials.

What did the Chief Justice say?

Chief Justice D.K. Regarding Vinesh Phogat, the division bench of Justice Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia said that Vinesh Phogat should be allowed to participate in the selection trial to be held on 30 and 31 May 2026. Apart from this, the court also directed that video recording of the trial should be done and independent people from Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) should be present in it. The court further said that motherhood should be respected in the country. Phogat became a mother in July 2025 and now she is making a comeback in domestic competition. The court said, ‘Motherhood is a celebration. It should not be made harmful to any player.

Indian Wrestling Federation had declared him ineligible

Indian Wrestling Federation had declared Vinesh Phogat ineligible till June 2026. In this, the federation had said that under the anti-doping rules of United World Wrestling (UWW), a player returning after retirement is required to give notice at least six months in advance. But Vinesh did not do this. Therefore he is not eligible to play in domestic tournaments.
