Gautam Gambhir’s big decision will decide captain’s future, eyes on Suryakumar
New Delhi. There is a possibility of once again seeing a big change in the leadership of the Indian T20 cricket team. The captaincy of current captain Suryakumar Yadav is not considered completely safe at present. Although under his captaincy, Team India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title, but the continuous decline in individual form has increased the concern of the selectors.
According to the report of news agency PTI, the future of Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy now completely depends on the opinion and role of the team’s head coach Gautam Gambhir. It is believed that the selection committee is seriously considering that if a player is not able to contribute consistently with the bat, then how appropriate is he to be given the responsibility of captaincy.
Suryakumar Yadav’s performance for the last one year has not been as per expectations. His bat also remained silent in IPL 2026, where he scored only 210 runs in 12 innings and his average was less than 18. This poor form has not only made his batting position unstable but has also increased the pressure on the captaincy.
A senior BCCI source was quoted as saying that the selectors seem to agree that “if a player is not able to cement his place as a batsman, it is difficult for him to continue as captain.” However, Gautam Gambhir is considered to be the biggest factor in this entire equation.
The relationship between Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav is said to be very strong. Even the nickname ‘SKY’ was given by Gambhir himself. If Gambhir supports him due to better understanding between the two in team management, then the selectors can postpone any major decision for the time being.
Meanwhile, regarding future plans, BCCI is also making a new strategy keeping in mind the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. For this reason many young players are being tried in leadership roles.
Shreyas Iyer’s name is emerging as a strong contender in this race. His aggressive captaincy style and experience is attracting the selectors. However, there is discussion in the cricket circle about the relationship between him and Gautam Gambhir.
There are possibilities regarding Shubman Gill also. He was kept out of the T20 team due to poor performance, but in case of change in captaincy, his return is considered almost certain.
The most interesting name that has emerged is that of Tilak Verma. According to reports, the selectors are looking at him as the future captain. For this reason, he has been given the captaincy of India-A team, so that his leadership ability can be assessed.
Apart from this, names of players like Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and young talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi are also said to be included in the future plans. Now it remains to be seen in which direction the T20 captaincy of Team India goes and whether Suryakumar Yadav is able to save his chair or not.
