CM Vijay Directs Police to Expedite Sexual Crime Cases

C Joseph Vijay on Monday directed police officials to promptly register sexual crime cases, conduct speedy investigations and ensure strict punishment for offenders.

The strong directive came during a high-level law and order review meeting held in Chennai following public outrage over the sexual assault and brutal murder of a 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore.

‘Severe Punishment Must Be Ensured’

During the meeting, CM Vijay instructed officials to deal firmly with individuals involved in heinous crimes, especially offences against women and children.

According to an official government statement, the chief minister stressed that:

“Sexual assault cases should be tried expeditiously and the culprits given severe punishment… so as to serve as a deterrent to others.”

The Tamil Nadu government said the focus would remain on faster investigations, stronger prosecution and preventive awareness measures.

Fast-Track Trials and Awareness Measures Ordered

The chief minister also instructed the Advocate General and senior officials to:

  • Speed up trials in sexual crime cases
  • Ensure proper legal handling of investigations
  • Increase precautionary measures
  • Launch awareness initiatives related to women and child safety

The move comes amid growing concerns over crimes against minors and women across the country.

Top Officials Attend High-Level Review Meeting

Several senior officials attended the emergency law and order review meeting at the Secretariat in Chennai, including:

  • Chief Secretary M Saikumar
  • Home Secretary K Manivasan
  • Advocate General Vijay Narayan
  • DGP Sandeep Roy Rathore
  • Senior officials from the Social Welfare and Women’s Rights Department

The meeting focused heavily on public safety, crime prevention and judicial coordination.

Coimbatore Case Sparks Statewide Outrage

The brutal killing of the 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore has triggered widespread anger and renewed debate over women’s and children’s safety in Tamil Nadu.

Political leaders, activists and citizens have demanded stronger policing, faster justice delivery and harsher punishment for sexual offenders.

The Vijay-led government now appears to be positioning itself on a zero-tolerance approach toward crimes against women and children.

Vijay Government Signals Tough Law-and-Order Stand

Since taking office, CM Vijay has repeatedly emphasised public safety and accountability in governance.

Monday’s directive is being seen as one of the strongest public messages yet from the Tamil Nadu government on handling sexual offences and violent crimes.

Officials are expected to monitor sensitive cases more closely and coordinate with prosecutors to ensure faster conviction rates in serious offences.
