“I want to score 200”: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi targets Chris Gayle’s historic T20 record

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stormed into cricket with bold hitting across the IPL and junior matches. Now aged fifteen, he eyes a mark never reached – 200 runs in a single T20 game. Though many have tried, none have made it that far with the bat. His path was built on sharp timing, calm choices, then explosive swings when needed. While others talk about records, he focuses only on each ball as it comes. Big numbers don’t come fast, yet his rhythm suggests they might come soon.

Not chasing fame, just performance. The stage grows louder, still he stays quiet, watching, waiting, striking. History often skips those who rush; he seems aware. A double tone in this format remains untouched. He trains like someone who plans to change that.

That teen star now eyes smashing Chris Gayle’s massive 175 – not out – the biggest solo mark ever seen in T20 play. Way back in 2013, Gayle lit up an IPL clash for Royal Challengers Bengaluru versus Pune Warriors India. Over ten years passed. Still, nobody’s come close.
Score two hundred in a T20 match, that’s what Sooryavanshi told Kevin Pietersen during their chat on The Switch.

Right after Pietersen mentioned Gayle’s 175, the young player only pushed harder towards his goal.
“Yeah, I want to break his record and score 200. If I play 20 overs in any game, I definitely will break that record,” he said confidently.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already come close to 200

Numbers fuel the teen’s self-assurance. More than once in youth matches, Sooryavanshi has brushed right up against 200 runs without crossing it.

Nineteen tens came his way when he played for Bihar in the Vijay Hazare Trophy before he launched into a 175-run show during the Under-19 World Cup decider. At present, his top knock in T20s reaches 144, showing just how forcefully he can take apart bowling lines even with youth on his side.

Last November, a blistering innings from Sooryavanshi lit up the ACC Men’s U19 Asia Cup when he faced the United Arab Emirates’ youth side. That hundred, it tied him with big names – Pant, Sharma, Patel, as one of India’s quickest in T20 history. Speed like his doesn’t come around often.
Astonishingly quick, the young batsman raced to a hundred in only 52 balls last year. That knock of 143 versus England U19 shook the cricket scene completely. Never before had such speed been seen in Youth ODI history.

The record stood firm, fastest ever at that level. Everyone took notice. Back then, surprisingly, Sooryavanshi didn’t hesitate to share his goal of hitting 200 runs. Still, he spoke of it as if it were just part of the plan.
“I will try to score 200 in the next match. I will try to play the full 50 overs. The more I score, the more the team will benefit,” he had said after the innings.

Now people talk more about Sooryavanshi alongside Sachin Tendulkar. Back in 2010, Tendulkar made history as the first to hit a double hundred in an ODI match. In a similar fashion, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi aims at stepping into new territory within T20 cricket, where few have gone before.
