José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid could cost club €15 million amid Benfica delay: Report

Real Madrid’s long-awaited reunion with José Mourinho has hit a significant financial snag. According to multiple reports, the Spanish giants will now have to pay up to €15 million to secure the services of “The Special One” from Benfica, after missing a key release clause deadline.

What Caused the Delay?

The primary reason for the increased cost is Real Madrid’s internal presidential election process. Incumbent president Florentino Pérez called for elections, which has delayed the official announcement of Mourinho as the new head coach. The special release clause in Mourinho’s Benfica contract — reportedly around €7 million  expired on May 26, 2026.

With the deadline now passed, Benfica holds significantly stronger negotiating power. The Portuguese club can demand the full €15m (roughly equivalent to Mourinho’s gross salary at Benfica) or push for direct negotiations to extract even more value.

Mourinho joined Benfica earlier and delivered a strong campaign, guiding them to an unbeaten league season and finishing third in the Primeira Liga. His success has only heightened interest from Real Madrid, who are looking to restore discipline and winning mentality after a trophyless period under previous management.

The 63-year-old Portuguese manager has a storied history with Los Blancos, having won major trophies during his first spell from 2010-2013, including a La Liga title and Copa del Rey.

What’s Next for Real Madrid and Benfica?

Real Madrid remains confident in completing the deal despite the higher fee, with verbal agreements reportedly already in place for a two-year contract. However, the administrative delays have given Benfica leverage to maximize compensation.

Benfica, meanwhile, is already eyeing potential replacements, with names like Marco Silva linked to the vacancy.

This development adds an unexpected twist to one of the most anticipated managerial moves of the summer. Football fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting the official confirmation as Real Madrid seeks to turn the page on recent struggles with Mourinho’s proven leadership at the helm.
