New Delhi. Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill has been passed in the Assam Assembly. The main objective of bringing this bill is to give equal rights to all the citizens. Now Assam has become the third state in the country where UCC bill has been passed in the Assembly. The Uniform Civil Code Bill was first passed in Uttarakhand and then in Gujarat. Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora had introduced The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill, 2026 in the Assembly on May 25, which was passed today. However, the opposition is opposing many provisions of this bill.

Under the UCC law, now more than one marriage in any religion will be illegal and there is a provision of punishment of up to 7 years for doing so. Besides, the age of the boy for marriage has been fixed at 21 years and the age of the girl has been fixed at 18 years, it will be mandatory to follow it. It will be mandatory to register within 60 days of marriage or Nikah. Divorce will also have to be registered. Failure to do so will result in a fine of Rs 10,000. There is a provision of imprisonment of up to three months or a fine of up to Rs 25,000 or both for registering a marriage through forged documents. Apart from this, women will now get equal rights as men in ancestral property. It will be mandatory for those who live in a house to register also.

The Assam government has kept people from the tribal community out of the scope of the UCC bill. However, some opposition leaders, especially Muslims, have raised objections regarding this. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that based on the conditions of Assam, we have made the UCC bill. After getting the President’s approval on this bill, a law will be made here and will be implemented. During the implementation of this law, if it is felt that some amendments should be made in it, then they will definitely be made. CM said, I do not think there will be any problem in implementing it.
