‘Global Hub’ of cigarettes China became, worldwide consumption decreased; But the Chinese smoked 39% more cigarettes

China Tobacco Report Cigarette Consumption: Amidst increasing health awareness around the world, a report has emerged from China which has worried experts. According to the data received, China remains the world’s largest center in terms of tobacco consumption.

The report has revealed that the citizens of China alone smoke almost half of the total cigarettes smoked worldwide. This is the situation when Chinese President Xi Jinping himself has declared a kind of ‘war’ against tobacco. Has been teasing.

The figures show China’s smoke

According to the report released by the Chinese Center for Disease Control (CDC), an average of 5 trillion cigarettes are consumed all over the world every year. The shocking thing is that out of these, 2.4 trillion cigarettes are smoked in China alone. In terms of statistics, out of the approximately 140 crore population of China, 23 percent people i.e. about 30 crore citizens are victims of cigarette addiction. That means 23 out of every 100 people in China smoke.

Contrary to the global trend, another worrying aspect of China’s situation in the report is that while there has been a 26 percent decline in cigarette consumption across the world between 2003 and 2023, on the contrary, a 39 percent increase in consumption has been seen in China.

President Xi Jinpingwho himself was once a heavy smoker and has now given up. He had promised to control it after assuming power in 2012. He talked about the fight against tobacco on many occasions, but no significant impact is visible on the ground level.

Strict laws but ineffective restrictions

China has made many laws for tobacco control. For example, selling cigarettes to children under 18 is a crime and smoking is prohibited on public transport or in other public places. Apart from this, in the year 2022, the Chinese government also imposed 10 percent tax on cigarettes and also implemented strict rules on e-cigarettes. Despite this, China aims to reduce smoking figures by 2030, which looks challenging given the current situation.

Deep connection between economy and tobacco

The biggest question is why cigarette consumption is not decreasing in China? The main reason for this is said to be economic benefits. The entire cigarette business in China is controlled by the state-owned ‘China National Tobacco Corporation’ Handles it.
