Philippine international to play in Bundesliga next season

Paderborn clinched an emotional 2-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg in a decisive promotion playoff match on Tuesday.

This win was a well-deserved result for Paderborn’s persistent efforts over recent years. The club has successfully built a stable roster while placing faith in young talents.

A standout contributor to Paderborn’s success has been Obermair. The 30-year-old, who has a German father and a Filipino mother, joined the team on a free transfer in 2022, according to Transfer market.

Throughout the current campaign, Obermair proved important to the club’s promotion to the Bundesliga, registering two goals and seven assists across 28 appearances.

Obermair initially accepted a call-up to the Philippines national team in 2021 during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. However, he did not make his official international debut until March 2026.

He quickly made an impact on the international stage, scoring a goal against Tajikistan in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Given his impressive club form, Obermair is expected to be included in the Philippine squad for the 2026 ASEAN Cup.

Obermair joins a growing list of Southeast Asian talents making their mark in German football.

Other notable names include Indonesian international Kevin Diks, playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Thai right-back Nicolas Mickelson at SV Elversberg. Maycon Cardozo, a player of Thai descent, is currently playing for Bayern Munich.
