Hyderabad blown away by Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s storm, Suresh Raina’s record could not be broken even after hitting 12 sixes.
In the knockout match of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026), there was a storm which destroyed the bowlers of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Rajasthan Royals (RR)’s young sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi did what even big giants could not imagine in a big and pressurized match like the Eliminator. Facing just 29 balls, Vaibhav played a brilliant inning of 97 runs which increased the heartbeats of the fans. During his explosive innings, he hit 5 fours and record breaking 12 skyscraper sixes.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi definitely created a series of records with his innings, but one page of cricket history remained which he could not turn. Vaibhav missed breaking the historical record of Suresh Raina, who is called ‘Mr. IPL’ in IPL history, which is now considered as ‘Immortal Record’.
What is the record of Suresh Raina, which even Vaibhav Suryavanshi could not break?
Suresh Raina has this magical record – scoring the most runs on the first 25 balls of an IPL innings. When Vaibhav Suryavanshi was playing against Hyderabad, he had scored 81 runs in his first 25 balls, which was less than Raina’s record. Even before this, Vaibhav had scored 79 runs in 25 balls, but could not reach the peak of Raina.
Not only Vaibhav, but the most aggressive batsmen of the present era like Travis Head (84 runs on 26 balls), Prabhsimran Singh (76 runs on 25 balls) and Jack Fraser McGurk (84 runs on 27 balls) also tried their best, but all bowed down before this 12 year old record.
That historic evening of 2014, when Raina created history at Wankhede
Suresh Raina played this charismatic inning against Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in Qualifier-2 of 2014. Batting first, Punjab had set a lofty target of 227 runs for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It was considered impossible to chase such a big score in a knockout match.
After opener Faf du Plessis was out in the very first over, Suresh Raina came to bat at number 3. Whatever happened after this became history. Raina rained boundaries in every corner of the ground. He scored with the help of 12 fours and 6 sixes in just 25 balls. 87 runs Had knocked. At that time his strike rate was $348$ and it seemed that he would blow away Chris Gayle’s record of fastest century in 30 balls.
Hearts of crores of fans were broken due to stealing one run.
Perhaps fate had something else in store. In the last over of the powerplay, Suresh Raina was unfortunately run out while trying to steal a run with Brendon McCullum. As soon as Raina was out, there was silence in Wankhede Stadium and this wonderful innings came to a sad end. After Raina’s departure, CSK’s batting disintegrated and the team had to lose the match, but that innings of Raina is still counted among the greatest innings in IPL history.
Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag may have been worried about some shortcomings in the team’s performance in the eliminator match against Hyderabad, but this innings of Vaibhav Suryavanshi has proved that he is the next superstar of Indian cricket. However, Suresh Raina’s storm of 87 runs in 25 balls is still standing tall in the record books.
