Big upset in French Open, Jannik Sinner out of the tournament after losing to Juan Manuel Cerundolo

French Open 2026: There was a big upset in the French Open on Thursday. Italy’s Jannik Sinner, who was considered a strong contender for the singles title in the tournament, has been out of the tournament. World number 1 player Sinner was shown the way out of the tournament after being defeated by Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1. With this defeat, Sinner’s dream of completing a career Grand Slam was shattered.

In this five-set match, when Jannik Sinner was leading 5-1 in the third set of his second round match, it seemed that victory would be his. But, suddenly Sinner suffered from a muscle strain. The 24-year-old Sinner served twice to win the match, but failed both times. Apart from this, at the score of 5-4, 0/40 he had to go out of the court and seek medical attention.

Cerundolo took advantage of the injury

After that Sinner was never fit. Cerundolo took full advantage of the injury to the legendary Italian player and pulled off the biggest upset of 2026 so far by winning 18 out of the last 20 games. Argentina’s 56th-ranked player Juan Manuel Cerundolo is the first player since 2000 to oust a top seed in this major tournament even before the third round. In 2000, this achievement was recorded in the name of Karol Kucera.

I am lucky – Serundolo

“It was very difficult for him,” Cerundolo said of Sinner after the win. I wasn’t able to win more than three games in a set, so I was a little lucky. He was the one who deserved to win this match, but who knows what happened next. I feel bad for him and hope he gets well soon.” Cerundolo will face either Spanish player Martin Landalus or Czech player Vit Kopriva in the third round.
