Now DKS Era in Karnataka Congress? Important question- What is the meaning of leadership transition?
The long-running internal tussle of Congress in Karnataka politics now appears to be reaching a new turning point. Siddaramaiah and D.K. Amid months of speculation regarding the balance of power between Shivakumar, the belief is now getting stronger that the “DKS Era” may be about to begin in the state. This is not just a story of change of Chief Minister, but it is also considered to be a big change related to the future politics, social equations and national strategy of Congress.
Only after the victory of Congress in the 2023 assembly elections, the question arose that who will become the Chief Minister? On one side was Siddaramaiah, who has been recognized as the biggest face of AHINDA (Minorities, Backward Classes and Dalits) politics. On the other hand D.K. Shivakumar, who is considered a master of organization, resources and crisis management. At that time, striking a balance between the two, the Congress high command made Siddaramaiah the Chief Minister and DK Shivakumar the Deputy Chief Minister. Since then the discussion about “rotation formula” continued continuously.
What are the big signs of power transition?
The first Mudra is related to caste balancing. Siddaramaiah’s politics has been mainly based on AHINDA social alliance. Whereas DK Shivakumar He is considered an influential leader of the Vokkaliga community. Congress feels that it is necessary to bring forward the Vokkaliga leadership to challenge the influence of JDS and BJP in South Karnataka. In such a situation, the emergence of DKS is being considered not only as a change in personality, but also as an attempt to solve social equations afresh.
The second major aspect is related to the 2028 strategy of Congress. The party understands that the alliance of BJP and JDS can become a big challenge in the coming elections. Siddaramaiah government tried to strengthen the social base in the state through welfare politics and warranty, but Congress now seems to be betting on DKS’s style for organizational and aggressive electoral politics.
Actually, the image of DK Shivakumar is that of a leader who is considered very strong in election management, resource mobilization and political networking. As CRISIL management, he has played such successful roles many times.
The third important aspect is related to national politics. In the last few years, DK Shivakumar has not been a leader limited to Karnataka only. His role as a troubleshooter for Congress has increased in Maharashtra, Telangana and many other states. In such a situation, if he becomes the Chief Minister, then Congress can try to develop him as a big power center in South India. This message will also be important for Rahul Gandhi and the Congress leadership that the party does not want to depend only on old faces, but is creating new regional power centres.
Changing face of Congress in Karnataka
However, the change of power in Karnataka will not be entirely easy for the Congress. The biggest challenge before Shivkumar will be to control factionalism. Many leaders of the Siddaramaiah camp do not want their political hold to weaken. Therefore, even after changing the Chief Minister, the real fight may continue regarding the cabinet, organization and balance of power. The challenge before the Congress high command will be to prevent the transition from turning into a conflict.
New command in the hands of DKS
Apart from this, governance will also become a big issue. Till now, DK Shivakumar has mainly been known as a leader of organization and strategy. After becoming the Chief Minister, his administrative ability will be tested. BJP has already been accusing the Congress government of corruption and internal power struggle. In such a situation, DKS will have to prove not only political management but also governance delivery.
The possible leadership transition in Karnataka is not a simple change in the internal politics of Congress. This is being considered an indication of Congress’s social equation, South India strategy and future leadership structure. Therefore, the biggest question is whether “DKS Era” will give new political energy to Congress, or will this change deepen the internal strife of the party.
‘Rahul’s big bet on DK’
Political analyst Rajesh Bharti says that the change of leadership in Congress is not just a change of power, but is a part of the party’s future strategy. Rahul Gandhi and his team have long felt that Karnataka’s older leaders practice “soft politics”, while D.K. Shivkumar is considered more effective in aggressive and organizational politics. This is the reason why his hold is said to be strong even among the party workers.
The Congress leadership feels that there is a need to prepare the organization in a new style in Karnataka in view of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections to be held in the next two to three years. Under this thinking, after the victory of Congress in the 2023 assembly elections, a “secret formula” was prepared for the post of Chief Minister. According to this, Siddaramaiah will be the Chief Minister for the first two and a half years and after that the responsibility will be given to DK Shivakumar for two and a half years.
It is now believed that Siddaramaiah’s resignation has removed the biggest obstacle to the transfer of power. The party leadership also wants that there should not be any kind of power struggle in the politics of the state in future. In such a situation, the option of joining Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha politics may remain open for Siddaramaiah, even if he has refused to enter central politics at present.
The Congress high command seems to be in a mood to give a completely free hand to DK Shivkumar. The party believes that his aggressive style, command over organization and crisis management ability can bring huge political benefits to the party in the coming elections. This is the reason why within the Congress today he is being considered as the “Pramod Mahajan Model” of the party.
