Eating utensils were being washed in the train toilet! FSSAI sent notice to IRCTC on viral video
Utensils Washed in Train Toilet : A video that has gone viral on social media has raised serious questions about the catering services of Indian Railways. In the video, an employee of the Mumbai-Ernakulam Duronto Express (train number 12223) was reportedly seen cleaning utensils inside the train toilet. It was claimed that these were the same utensils and cutlery which are used to serve food to passengers.
The video was shared on social media platform X, after which it quickly went viral. In the video, a passenger questions the employee whether it is appropriate to wash utensils in a place like a toilet. However, the employee seems to be silent the entire time. An attendant standing outside is also questioned about this, who initially denied having any knowledge of the incident.

Food utensils being washed in the train toilet
The matter gained momentum after the video went viral. The post claimed that the incident pertains to the first AC coach of the train, where passengers expect better facilities and cleanliness. It is seen in the video that a basket full of utensils is kept on top of the toilet seat.
When the passenger asked the attendant if these were the utensils in which food was served to passengers, she replied that the utensils were usually cleaned somewhere else and that she had just witnessed the incident. This entire incident has sparked a debate on the onboard catering system and food safety standards of Indian Railways.

FSSAI issues notice to IRCTC seeking clarification
Considering the seriousness of the matter, FSSAI has issued a notice to IRCTC seeking clarification. The regulatory body said that if the claim shown in the video is true then it would be considered a violation of food safety and hygiene rules.
According to FSSAI, cleaning of food items and utensils that come in contact with them should be as per the prescribed hygiene standards, so that there is no risk of any kind of infection or pollution. At present, there has been no public reaction from IRCTC on this notice, but this incident has definitely increased the concern among the passengers.
