Eight People Arrested In Pune Hooch Tragedy

There has been a stir in the state after the death of 13 people due to drinking poisonous liquor in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad region. Taking this matter seriously, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed deep concern. He has instructed the police commissioners of both the cities to take strict action against the culprits and not to give any concession to anyone. The Chief Minister said that this entire matter will be thoroughly investigated and it will be ensured that no accused involved in this racket escapes punishment.

Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Fadnavis said that this is not just a normal accident but is being treated like a case of murder. Very strict legal sections will be imposed on the accused. The Chief Minister also clarified that he is in constant touch with the Police Commissioners of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Police have located the place where liquor was allegedly being made by mixing toxic chemicals like methanol. He said that so far eight accused have been arrested and a massive operation is being conducted to search for other accused. Serious patients admitted in hospitals are being treated on top priority so that more lives are not lost.

Chief Minister Fadnavis said, “We have discussed with the police commissioners of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The place where this chemical was being prepared has been traced. So far 8 people have been arrested and more arrests will be made. Strict action will be taken against the culprits. This case is actually like murder and very strict sections are being imposed in it. No one will be spared.”

Following the instructions of the Chief Minister, the police has intensified the action. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar visited the incident site and reviewed the ongoing operation in affected areas like Hadapsar. Police, State Excise Department and forensic team have launched a joint raid to bust the illegal liquor network. Forensic investigation has revealed suspicion of mixing about 215 liters of poisonous industrial methanol in country liquor.

The investigation is focused on notorious liquor mafia Yogesh Wankhede as the main accused in this case. It is being told that many cases have already been registered against him. According to the police, a strong legal case is being prepared against this entire racket on the basis of medical reports and forensic investigation.
