Supreme Court reprimands NTA in NEET paper leak case

NEET paper leak case: The hearing of NEET paper leak case is going on in the Supreme Court today. The Supreme Court, while reprimanding the National Testing Agency (NTA) in the question paper leak of NEET-UG exam, asked how such a big mistake could happen despite the existence of monitoring mechanism and monitoring committees. Comparing it with UPSC, the court said that such incidents have never happened in the country’s highest civil services examination and there is a need to learn a lesson from the UPSC system. Taking on record the affidavits filed by NTA and Dr Radhakrishnan, the court granted additional time to the Center to file its reply. What did NTA say after this?

It further said, “This change will be implemented from the next examination cycle in consultation with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (the associated ministry for NEET-UG) – bringing all major National Medical Commission (NTA) examinations to the CBT platform.”

NEET-UG examinations will be held in CBT mode from 2027.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Friday told the Supreme Court that after consulting the Central government, it is all set to conduct NEET-UG in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode instead of pen and paper mode from next year.

The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), made this statement before the Supreme Court, which is hearing a bunch of petitions related to the sensational paper leak this year, due to which the exam, scheduled for May 3, was cancelled.

In an affidavit filed before a bench of Justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, the NTA said that a high-level committee of experts (HLCE) has recommended changing NEET-UG to CBT mode.

It said that among the major National Medical Commission (NTA) examinations, only the NEET (UG) 2026 examination was conducted in pen and paper (PPT) mode, primarily as per the plan of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Medical Commission.

It also said that all other major National Medical Commission (NTA) examinations are already being conducted in CBT mode.

“HLCE has specifically recommended changing NEET (UG) from PPT to CBT mode as well as introducing multi-session and multi-stage examination system,” the affidavit filed by NTA Director (Legal) said.

What did the Supreme Court ask the high level committee?

Justice P.S. Narasimha questioned Dr. Radhakrishnan about the extent of monitoring that took place following the committee’s recommendations. Noting that Dr Radhakrishnan had served on the High Level Committee before being appointed to the Monitoring Committee, Justice Narasimha asked how much monitoring of implementation was actually done. The court also asked Dr Radhakrishnan what factors were not considered by the committee due to which the paperwork was leaked despite already recommended security measures. The court said, we should not let down our youth, it is very sad for them as they have invested a lot of time and emotions in this.
