Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar becomes the new Vice Chief of the Navy; Took big responsibilities from INS Vikramaditya to Western Fleet
Admiral Ajay Kochhar took charge as the country’s 48th Vice Chief of Naval Staff (VCNS) in the Indian Navy on Friday (May 29). After assuming the new responsibility, he reached the National War Memorial in New Delhi and paid tribute to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the country. The Vice Admiral paid tribute to the martyred soldiers by laying a wreath in their memory. During this, outgoing Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan also paid tribute at the National War Memorial.

Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar is counted among the senior and experienced officers of the Indian Navy. Ajay Kochhar, an alumnus of the prestigious National Defense Academy (NDA), Pune, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988. He is considered an expert in Gunnery and Missile Systems and has held many important command, operational and staff responsibilities in his career spanning over 37 years.
During his career he commanded warships such as INS Nashak, Vibhuti and Kirpan. Apart from this, he was also the Commissioning Commanding Officer of Frigate INS Trikand. Vice Admiral Kochhar also commanded the Indian Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. During his tenure the successful integration and operationalization of Vikramaditya’s Air Wing was accomplished.

He has received higher military education from the Defense Services Staff College, Wellington, Naval War College Goa and the Royal College of Defense Studies, United Kingdom. At Naval Headquarters he also held important positions like Joint Director Naval Plans, Director of Staff Requirements and Principal Director DSCT.
After promotion to flag rank in 2018, he held important responsibilities related to aircraft carrier projects and warship construction and acquisition. After this, in the year 2021, he took command of the Western Fleet. Later he was also the Commandant of the National Defense Academy, where he played a key role in strengthening the training standards and infrastructure.
On 25 May 2024, he took over as Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command. At that time, security challenges in the western maritime region had increased considerably. He led the Navy’s strategic preparedness to deal with conventional and non-conventional threats on the West Coast. He also played an important role in the high-speed naval operations conducted during Operation Sindoor.
For his excellent services and leadership abilities, he has been awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in the year 2022 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) in the year 2026. Before assuming the post of Vice Chief of Naval Staff, he served as Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command. There he made significant contributions in strengthening coordination and joint operational capability among the three armies.
