What exactly is ‘flex-fuel’ technology?

Many people wonder what exactly is Flex-Fuel? In normal petrol cars we can use only petrol or maximum 20% ethanol blended petrol (E20). If 100 percent ethanol is added to it, a normal engine will fail. However, cars equipped with Flex Fuel technology have a special type of fuel system and engine management system installed. This engine can also run on 100 percent pure ethanol i.e. ‘E100’ fuel without any problems. The car can also run on regular petrol if needed, meaning the driver has a flexible choice of fuel.

Calculation of engine modifications and cost

Ethanol is a fuel that is more corrosive and has a different flammability than gasoline. So Maruti has made several important technical changes in the Franks Flex-Fuel engine, fuel pipes, fuel tank and engine valves. Since these modifications require advanced technology, this flex-fuel car is likely to be slightly more expensive than the regular petrol model. However, since ethanol is much cheaper than petrol, experts predict that the extra cost of buying a car will be recovered in just a few months.

Franks will be a game changer for the Indian market

Maruti Suzuki had earlier showcased the ‘E85’ (85% ethanol)-powered Franks in Japan and the flex-fuel model of the ‘Wagon R’ in India. However, the Franks to be officially launched in the Indian market could be the first 100% ‘E100’ compliant car in the country. The official announcement of the car’s price and commercial sale timings is likely to be made on June 4. With this move by Maruti, other companies like Tata, Mahindra and Hyundai will also launch their flex-fuel cars at a faster pace in the future. If the number of ethanol pumps increases across the country, it will no doubt be a ‘game changer’ decision that will change the face of the Indian auto sector.
