5 big news regarding LPG cylinder, applicable across the country from June 1

New Delhi. The government and oil companies are working towards implementing a new system regarding LPG and PNG gas consumers in the country. Its objective is to improve gas supply, prevent misuse and deliver the facilities to domestic consumers in a more effective manner. In such a situation, some important changes related to June 1 are under discussion, information about which is important for every gas consumer.

1. Number of LPG consumers in the country crosses 33.5 crore

The number of LPG connections in the country has increased rapidly in the last decade. At present there are about 33.5 crore LPG consumers in the country. On the other hand, the number of PNG consumers is around 1.64 crore. The government wants more and more people to use PNG in areas where piped gas facilities are available so that the pressure on LPG can be reduced.

2. Increased monitoring of LPG after taking PNG connection

According to reports, around 6.5 lakh new PNG connections were issued till March 2026, but the actual gas consumption remained lower than expected. This indicates that many families have taken PNG connections but continue to use LPG cylinders. For this reason, monitoring of the usage of both the connections is now being increased.

3. Emphasis on one family-one gas connection system

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) are matching data of consumers who have both PNG and LPG connections at the same address. Its objective is to prevent black marketing, hoarding and unnecessary subsidy benefits of domestic gas. In areas where the PNG network is fully available, consumers may be required to follow prescribed rules.

4. The interval between LPG refill booking may increase

There is discussion of changing the refill booking period to better manage the availability of gas. In urban areas, the refill booking interval can be increased from 21 days to 25 days. In rural areas, this period can be kept up to 45 days. Its objective is to prevent misuse of domestic cylinders and to deliver gas on time to genuine needy consumers.

5. Limit of subsidized cylinders remains intact

According to the government arrangement, only 12 subsidized LPG cylinders will still be provided to domestic consumers in a year. After this, payment for additional cylinders will have to be made as per the market price. Besides, rules related to security deposit, regulator, pipe and installation charges will also be applicable for consumers taking new gas connections.
