Tesla Model Y Price Cut: The Entry Variant Is Now Rs 9 Lakh Cheaper

Tesla has revised the price of the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive in India, bringing it down to Rs 50.89 lakh, ex-showroom. The variant was earlier priced at Rs 59.89 lakh, which means the entry point into Tesla ownership has dropped by Rs 9 lakh.

This is not a small correction. For a brand that entered India at a clear premium, the price revision changes the Model Y’s position in the luxury EV market. It also makes the five-seat Model Y more clearly separated from the larger Model Y L, which was launched recently at Rs 61.99 lakh.

The bigger change is that Tesla has also discontinued the Premium Long Range RWD variant, which was earlier priced at Rs 67.89 lakh. As a result, the India line-up is now simpler: the five-seat Model Y Premium RWD at Rs 50.89 lakh and the six-seat Model Y L Premium AWD at Rs 61.99 lakh.

Before the revision, Tesla’s India line-up had a pricing problem. The standard Model Y Premium RWD was priced at Rs 59.89 lakh, while the Model Y L Premium AWD came in at Rs 61.99 lakh. That meant the larger, six-seat, all-wheel-drive version was only Rs 2.1 lakh more expensive than the five-seat rear-wheel-drive model.

That gap was too small. A buyer already spending close to Rs 60 lakh would naturally look at the Model Y L and ask whether it made more sense to stretch a little. The new pricing solves that problem. The entry Model Y is now Rs 11.1 lakh cheaper than the Model Y L.

This gives the range clearer logic. The regular Model Y becomes the more affordable five-seat option for buyers who want the Tesla badge, technology and range without paying for the larger body. The Model Y L becomes the more expensive family-focused version with six seats, dual-motor all-wheel drive and a longer wheelbase.

The Model Y Premium RWD offers a WLTP-certified range of up to 500 km. Tesla claims 0 to 100 kph acceleration in 5.9 seconds. It gets a 16-inch central touchscreen and is offered with either an all-black or Zen Grey interior theme.

The regular Model Y measures 4,790 mm in length, 1,982 mm in width and 1,624 mm in height, with a 2,890 mm wheelbase. It is a five-seater and remains rear-wheel drive in this variant.

By comparison, the Model Y L is larger. It is 179 mm longer, 44 mm taller and has a 150 mm longer wheelbase than the standard-wheelbase Model Y. It also offers a WLTP range of 681 km and dual-motor all-wheel drive. This is why the revised price gap is important. The two versions now serve different buyer needs more clearly.

The first reason is positioning. At nearly Rs 60 lakh, the Model Y RWD looked expensive for a rear-wheel-drive five-seat EV imported as a completely built unit. It had to compete with premium electric SUVs and crossovers from established brands that already have larger dealer and service networks in India.

The second reason is internal competition. Once the Model Y L arrived at Rs 61.99 lakh, the older Rs 59.89 lakh price for the regular Model Y became difficult to defend. Tesla had to either increase the Model Y L price or reduce the regular Model Y price. It chose the latter.

The third reason is trust-building. Tesla is still new in India. It has strong brand recognition, but it does not yet have the long local ownership history that Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volvo, Kia or Hyundai have built. A sharper entry price makes the first step easier for buyers who were interested but hesitant.

At Rs 50.89 lakh, the Model Y now sits in a more serious luxury EV buying zone. It undercuts the Kia EV6, which is listed around Rs 65.97 lakh, and gives Tesla a stronger argument against upcoming premium EVs in the Rs 55 lakh-plus bracket.

The price cut also gives the Model Y a psychological advantage. A starting price just above Rs 50 lakh feels different from one close to Rs 60 lakh. For many buyers, that Rs 9 lakh difference can cover insurance, charging setup, accessories and part of the financing cost.

The difficult part is how this affects early buyers. Anyone who bought the Model Y Premium RWD at Rs 59.89 lakh has seen the same variant become much cheaper very quickly. Tesla has not announced any compensation, upgrade benefit or goodwill package for those buyers.

That is a sensitive issue in India, where resale value and purchase timing are taken seriously. A sharp early price cut can help future sales, but it can also make early adopters more cautious. Tesla will need to manage that carefully as it builds its India customer base.

The revised pricing makes the Model Y more logical and more competitive. It also shows Tesla is willing to adjust quickly when the market does not respond as expected.
