Rekha Gupta in action mode on Delhi’s water crisis, gets assurance of additional water from Haryana
Amidst the increasing water crisis in the capital Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while reviewing the situation, has directed the officials to speed up the relief work. Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has assured to maintain the supply of minimum 1000 cusecs of water to Delhi through the canal, which is expected to provide great relief to the people of the capital.
At present there is a huge gap between the demand and availability of water in Delhi. The city is getting about 100 MGD (million gallons per day) less water than required. The situation became more serious when the water level of the reservoir near Wazirabad Barrage dropped from the normal 674.15 feet to about 668 feet. This has had a direct impact on the production capacity of Wazirabad and Chandrawal water purification plants.
Seeing the seriousness of the situation, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta held a high-level meeting with Water Minister Parvesh Verma and senior officials of Delhi Jal Board. He directed to take all possible steps to ensure availability of water in the affected areas.
More than 980 tankers, more than 6 thousand trips daily
According to the government, currently more than 980 tankers have been deployed in the areas suffering from water shortage, which are delivering water to the people by making more than 6 thousand trips every day. Small tankers have also been arranged for densely populated areas and narrow streets. Instructions have been given to further increase the number of tankers if needed.
Additional borewell will provide 10.5 MGD relief
To increase water supply, new borewells have been installed in Yamuna Khadar area, providing additional 10.5 MGD water per day. Also, officials have been instructed to take immediate action on incidents of water leakage.
11,055 water-related complaints were registered on the Delhi Jal Board helpline during the last one week. Of these, more than 8,500 cases have been resolved, while work on the remaining complaints is going on at a rapid pace.
Even faster steps towards permanent solution
The government does not want to be limited to only immediate relief. Many important projects are being worked on rapidly for long-term solution to the water crisis. These also include a plan to bring water from Haryana through pipeline, the feasibility of which is being studied by the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee.
Apart from this, work is also underway towards dredging and desilting of Yamuna, installation of new water treatment plants, additional borewells, and implementation of dual pipeline system to use the treated water of sewage treatment plant for non-drinking purposes.
1250 MGD water required in summer
Water Minister Pravesh Verma said that during the scorching heat, Delhi requires about 1250 MGD of water. Due to falling level of Wazirabad reservoir, two major water treatment plants are getting 80 to 100 MGD less water. Despite this, Delhi Jal Board has been successful in maintaining the supply of about 900 MGD water daily by providing additional water from Carrier Line Canal and bore wells installed on the banks of Yamuna.
