New warmth in Canada-China relations, trade may double by 2030

New Delhi: There are signs of improvement in relations between Canada and China in recent times. In this sequence, during his visit to Canada, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi talked about further strengthening the trade relations between the two countries. He said that by the year 2030, Canada’s exports to China can increase not by 50 percent, but by double i.e. by 100 percent. He gave this statement during a high-level meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand.

What did Anita Anand say in the meeting?

Foreign Minister Anita Anand clarified in the meeting that Canada is focusing on strengthening its economy and looking for new international trading partners. He also said that Canada’s economic relationship with China is important and it can prove beneficial for both countries. This three-day visit of Wang Yi to Canada is the first official visit of a Chinese Foreign Minister in the last ten years, which is being considered a sign of an important change in the relations between the two countries.

Earlier in January, a preliminary trade agreement was signed between the two countries, under which some tariffs imposed on electric vehicles and major agricultural crops like canola were reduced. During the same period, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took a new diplomatic initiative by becoming the first Canadian Prime Minister to visit China since 2017.

Currently, China remains Canada’s second largest trading partner. However, due to the tariffs imposed by America, Canada is now working on a strategy to reduce its trade dependence on America. Prime Minister Carney has recently set a goal that Canada will double its total exports in the next ten years. For this, his government has so far signed more than 20 economic and security agreements.

Carney emphasized on partnership with America

In a recent address given in New York, Prime Minister Carney also stressed the need for a new type of partnership with America. He said that a strong Canada would prove beneficial not only for itself but also for America.

However, some disputes remain in the relations between the two countries. On May 23, a Canadian warship HMCS Charlottetown passed through the Taiwan Strait, to which China expressed strong objection. China called it a step against its sovereignty and security and said that any such attempt will not be accepted. Issues related to Taiwan and security still remain a cause of tension between the two countries.
