Rajat Patidar Success Story: How did the one who came merely as an injury replacement change the fortunes of RCB?

IPL 2026 Final RCB vs GT, Rajat Patidar Success Story: For almost two decades, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) continued to carry a burden from which it seemed impossible to get rid of. Every season starts with a new hope and ends with the same old disappointment. ‘Ee Saala Cup Namde’ (this year the cup is ours) remained just a slogan, which repeatedly reminded the fans how far away the IPL trophy was for RCB. Then comes the entry of a captain whom perhaps no one had expected.

Rajat Patidar, who stayed away from the glitz, was very calm and serious in nature, never fit the definition of the traditional ‘superstar’ around which franchise teams are usually formed. But under the captaincy of this player, finally ‘Ee Saala Cup Namdu’ (this year the cup is ours) turned into reality. Now, with RCB standing just one win away from defending their title, Rajat Patidar is on the verge of creating history. He is very close to joining the elite club of legends like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in the history of IPL.

Rajat Patidar’s journey from an injury replacement to the captain who made the team a champion is no less than a film script.

A new avatar in the year 2026

Most teams fail to maintain that success after winning the title, but Patidar ensured that RCB’s dominance continued. If IPL 2025 was all about ending the season drought, then IPL 2026 proved that that win was no fluke. This season has seen a new and improved form of Patidar’s captaincy. His decisions on the field have become more accurate, the maze of fielding has been very aggressive and he has shown amazing wisdom in using the bowlers. Along with captaincy, his bat has also caused a lot of havoc this year.

Patidar has scored 486 runs in 14 matches, which is the best performance of his IPL career. During this period, he hit 41 skyscraper sixes and included himself among the most dangerous batsmen of the middle order. This captain, who looks very calm outside the field, remains a threat to the opponents in the middle overs inside the field.

The most memorable moment of this season came in Qualifier-1 against Gujarat Titans. The final ticket was at stake and Patidar played the most historic game of his captaincy innings. He played a stormy inning of 93 unbeaten runs in just 33 balls. RCB scored the biggest score in playoff history and directly made it to the finals. The player who once remained unsold in the auction and was later called as a replacement, is today just one step away from matching Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

The captain who changed the fortunes of RCB

Along with batting coach Dinesh Karthik and head coach Andy Flower, Patidar transformed RCB from a ‘star-dependent’ team into the most balanced and strong team of the tournament. There was depth in the batting, bowling got a precise direction and the atmosphere in the dressing room became such that the team forgot to rely on any one big name. Looking back today, as easy as this decision seems, it was not that easy then.

Just before IPL 2025, RCB was facing a big leadership crisis. Faf du Plessis’s journey was over and Virat Kohli was with the team, but he had refused to take the responsibility of captaincy again. Everyone expected that the franchise would bet on a big international name.

But RCB expressed confidence in the player’s ‘character’ rather than any ‘celebrity’. They retained Patidar for Rs 11 crore before the mega auction of IPL 2025. Patidar had earlier captained Madhya Pradesh in the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024, where they lost to Mumbai captained by Shreyas Iyer. This move of RCB proved to be the most masterstroke in the history of the franchise.

That one innings that changed life

RCB first bought Patidar in the mini-auction of IPL 2021 at a base price of just Rs 20 lakh. This top-order batsman from Madhya Pradesh had a good reputation in domestic cricket (he later played a key role in MP winning the Ranji Trophy after 69 years). However, his first season for RCB was very disappointing. He got only four chances in the middle order, in which he could score only 71 runs. The result was that he was released before the mega auction of IPL 2022 and no one bought him in the auction.

Disappointed by this setback, Patidar left his IPL dreams behind and fixed the dates of his marriage in May 2022. But fate had something else in store. RCB wicketkeeper Lavneeth Sisodia got injured in the middle of the season and then head coach Mike Hesson called Patidar. Patidar later told in an interview that he initially did not want to join the team because he felt that he would just sit on the bench for the entire season. But on the insistence of the family he agreed. What happened after this is history…

Patidar got a chance to play 8 matches that season and became RCB’s most successful uncapped player (who has not made his international debut). He scored 333 runs, which included that magical inning of 112* runs in 54 balls in the eliminator match against Lucknow Super Giants. He became the first uncapped player to score a century in the history of IPL playoffs.

When injury took away sleep

Just when it seemed that Patidar’s career was ready to take off, there was a big shock. Due to heel injury, he was completely ruled out of IPL 2023. Missing an entire season is mentally devastating for any player. But he did not give up. After recovering, he returned to domestic cricket and gradually regained his rhythm. On the basis of his excellent performance in domestic cricket, he got a chance to make his ODI debut against South Africa in 2023, where he scored 22 runs as an opener. After this, in 2024, he also made his Test debut against England and scored 63 runs in three matches.

‘Call’ for spin bowlers

When Patidar returned to RCB jersey after recovering from injury, he scored 395 runs in 15 matches while playing in the middle order. What was more important was that he showed the world what he could do. Rajat hit 33 sixes that season and was counted among the best ‘spin haters’ (batsmen who brutally beat spin) of the league. He finished the season with a strike rate of 177.33 and established himself as a complete match-winner.

This was the reason that when the time of change of captaincy came in RCB, Patidar was no longer just a comeback story. He had become one of the most dangerous batsmen of the tournament and the most reliable player of the team and today, he is the captain who led RCB to the title. In this franchise which is adorned with big superstars, finally a quiet and unheard batsman coming out of domestic cricket did what the big giants could not do. He has become the biggest hero of RCB.
