Gold medalist para athlete shot dead, police engaged in investigation
New Delhi. The murder of young para-athlete Chirag Tyagi, who was dreaming of winning medals for the country on the international stage, has shocked the entire sports world. Chirag, who had made his mark at the national level at the age of just 24, was shot dead in Ghaziabad. The information that came to light after the incident shocked everyone, because the accused of murder turned out to be none other than his old friend and para-athlete.
Chirag Tyagi, resident of Basantpur Saintli village of Muradnagar area of Ghaziabad, was counted among the emerging para athletes of the country. Recently, he achieved a big achievement by winning the gold medal in the 400 meter race of the National Para Athletics Competition held in Bengaluru. With this victory, he had almost assured his place for the Para Asian Games to be held in Japan in October. His success was being celebrated in the family and village, but no one thought that this happiness would turn into mourning in a few days.
According to the police, investigation was started after information about the body of a youth being found in Sai Kunj area. The team that reached the spot found that Chirag had been shot at very close range. After the initial investigation suspected murder, the police started scanning the footage of CCTV cameras installed nearby. Meanwhile, a suspicious person appeared, who was identified as Yash Khatik.
During interrogation, Yash Khatik confessed to the murder. Police investigation revealed that Yash is also a player associated with para athletics and earlier used to train with Chirag. Both used to participate in blind category competitions. The accused told that some time ago Chirag had complained against him in a case related to document verification. Following the complaint, his qualification was canceled and he was out of the competition. He was angry with Chirag regarding this matter and was planning to take revenge.
According to the police, the accused illegally arranged for a pistol and as soon as he got the opportunity, he targeted Chirag. He was trying to abscond after the murder, but was soon caught with the help of CCTV footage and technical investigation.
According to family members, Chirag had left the house saying that he was going to the hostel. The family became worried after not being contacted for a long time. Meanwhile, the police received information about a dead body and it was later identified as Chirag. This news brought great sorrow to the family.
Police are now searching for the pistol used in the murder. It is also being investigated whether any other person had a role in this incident. A case has been registered in the matter and further legal action is being taken.
Chirag Tyagi’s untimely death has left not only his family but the entire sports community in deep shock. A player, who was to represent India in Japan a few months later, is now only in memories.
