What is the process of scrapping an old car? How is this scrap recycled?
As the number of vehicles in India is increasing rapidly, the problem of managing old and polluting vehicles is becoming critical. For this, the central government has implemented vehicle scrapping policy. This policy enables safe disposal of old vehicles and recycling of their materials.
Generally for scrapping a car that is 15 to 20 years old or technically unfit, a vehicle owner has to approach an authorized vehicle scrapping center. The vehicle is accepted for scrapping process after verification of vehicle registration, RC book, identity card and other necessary documents. Then the vehicle’s components that can harm the environment like fuel, engine oil, coolant, batteries are safely separated.

After this, the process of separating the various parts of the car begins. Engine, gearbox, tires, glass, plastic parts and metal parts are separated. Consumable spare parts can be repaired and resold in the market. The rest of the vehicle is crushed with the help of large machines and its metals are extracted separately.
About 75 to 80 percent of the material in a scrapped car can be recycled. Iron and steel are smelted and used in the manufacture of new vehicles or other industrial products. Metals such as aluminum and copper can also be recycled. Plastic parts are processed and used to make new plastic products. Certain types of glass can also be recycled.

Vehicle scrapping not only reduces waste, but also saves natural resources and conserves energy. Using recycled metal is more profitable and environmentally friendly than mining new metal. So vehicle scrapping is not just disposal of old cars but is considered an important step towards sustainable development.
