- After making corona vaccine, now Indian company will make drug against Ebola virus
- More than 900 affected worldwide
Ebola virus infection As it is increasing day by day, it has been decided to develop a vaccine against this virus. Considering the increased risk of this infection, By the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a ‘Global Health Emergency’. The Government of India has also implemented similar precautionary protocols (protocols) as those followed during the Covid-19 pandemic; However, the main focus is now on preventing the spread of this virus by developing a vaccine. For this purpose, ‘CEPI’, a global organization dedicated to combating epidemics worldwide, has sanctioned $60 million (Rs 570 crore) to develop a vaccine against the Ebola virus.
More than 200 deaths recorded
Throughout East Africa, including the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, the threat of the Ebola virus remains. A specific strain of the virus called ‘Bundibugyo’ has so far killed more than 200 people, while more than 900 people have been infected with the virus. Considering the seriousness of the situation, CEPI has awarded Rs 570 crore to three different groups, including an Indian company, to accelerate the development of an Ebola vaccine. Announcing the funding, CEPI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Hatchett directed the vaccine development process to be completed as quickly as possible.

Allocation of funds of Rs.570 crores
It is important to mention here that CEPI was the organization that funded vaccine development during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, US company Moderna, University of Oxford and International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) have been given a total of about 60 million dollars to support the vaccine development work. The largest share of this fund has been given to Moderna Company with 50 million dollars. Meanwhile, the UK-based Oxford University and the world’s largest vaccine manufacturing company, the Serum Institute of India (SII), have received $8.6 million in funding.
The University of Oxford and the Serum Institute will jointly develop a vaccine called ‘ChAdOx1 Bundibugyo’. The vaccine will be based on the same technical platform that was used to develop the ‘Oxford/AstraZeneca’ (CoviShield) vaccine during the Covid-19 pandemic. IAVI, the third group to receive funding, has been awarded $3.2 million in funding to support its vaccine development efforts. IAVI will manufacture this single-dose vaccine, using the same technology used to develop Merck’s ‘Ervebo’ vaccine. The ‘Ervebo’ vaccine was instrumental in stopping the spread of the ‘Zaire’ strain of Ebola.
A multi-million dollar package for Ebola
Many international organizations around the world have shown their support to combat the Ebola crisis by providing multi-million dollar aid packages. Gavi, the Global Vaccine Alliance, has announced a donation of 50 million dollars. Additionally, the World Bank’s Pandemic Fund has provided a grant of $220.6 million (about Rs 1,840 crore). With this substantial financial support and coupled with the tireless efforts of scientists, various countries on the African continent and the World Health Organization are all set to control this deadly epidemic in the near future.
