New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Tuesday administered the oath of office to five new judges of the Supreme Court, taking the number of judges in the top court to 37, the highest ever.
The Chief Justice administered the oath of office as judges of the Supreme Court to senior advocate V. Mohana, Justice Sheel Nagu, Justice Shri Chandrashekhar, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Arun Palli. The swearing-in ceremony was held in the Supreme Court premises. The number of judges in the apex court is now 37, which is one less than the sanctioned increase of 38.

The Center on Monday approved the appointment of Chief Justice Nagu of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chief Justice Chandrashekhar of Bombay High Court, Chief Justice Sachdeva of Madhya Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice Palli of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court and senior advocate Mohana as judges of the Supreme Court. The government last month issued an ordinance to amend a law increasing the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India.
