Gavaskar’s advice to IPL teams: Scouts are cheating, don’t bet crores on the performance of small leagues.

IPL Updates: Indian cricket’s legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has advised IPL franchises to be cautious about the selection of players. He says that many players who perform well in state and city level T20 leagues are unable to stand against the high level bowling in IPL.

Writing in a column, Gavaskar wrote that there is a big difference in the level of local leagues and IPL. Many batsmen who hit big shots in smaller leagues are seen struggling against international level bowlers in the IPL. In such a situation, selecting players on the basis of only a few matches or popular performances can be risky.

He also raised questions on the scouting system of the franchises. According to Gavaskar, sometimes scouts get influenced by players’ agents, publicity or some memorable innings rather than their actual ability. The result is that despite spending crores of rupees, teams are not able to achieve the expected performance from the players.

He further wrote that when a team buys a player for a huge amount and then makes him sit out after only a few matches, it shows the weakness of the scouting process. He admitted that IPL is such a platform where the true potential of the players comes to light very quickly and the exaggerated image does not last long.

Gavaskar also wrote that many players perform mediocrely throughout the season, but on the basis of one good innings, they regain the trust of the teams for the next season. According to him, franchises should evaluate players more deeply in their selection, so that big decisions are not taken based on just one or two performances.
