Recently Tel Aviv had also recognized Somaliland as a separate country from Somalia. It also expected America to recognize it as a new country, but Washington has confirmed the unity and integrity of Somalia.
According to the report of Middle East Eye, after pressure from Saudi and other Arab countries, America has confirmed the unity and integrity of Somalia. That means America is not going to recognize Somaliland as a country at the moment.
The US State Department has given a report to Congress regarding Somaliland. It states that Somalia was incorporated for the development of Somaliland. The US has excellent relations with Somaliland, but Washington affirms Somalia’s sovereignty and integrity.
The report quoted American officials as saying that President Donald Trump would hardly recognize Somaliland. Because, there is pressure on them from Arab and Muslim countries. Countries like Saudi, Qatar and Pakistan have openly opposed it.
The Trump administration believes that instead of recognizing Somaliland, efforts should be made to take the whole of Somalia under its control. Trump has criticized Somalia’s government and system on many occasions. Trump calls Somalia a country of dishonest people.
