Will assembly elections be held not in 2027, but in November-December this year? Surprising reason revealed
At this time, a news has come out in the politics of Uttar Pradesh which has created panic in the entire political circles. It is being speculated that the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh can be held before the scheduled time, i.e. in the month of November-December of 2026 instead of the year 2027. There is a huge administrative problem behind this murmur. In fact, the National Census Department has made it clear to the Election Commission that the census work is to be done on a war footing across the country in the months of February and March next year, which has also got the green signal from the Union Cabinet.
Since Census is one of the biggest administrative processes in the country and involves the duty of lakhs of government employees, the Census Department has already alerted the Election Commission that their entire machinery will be busy in this work during February-March. It would be next to impossible to conduct elections in this situation.
What does the Election Commission rule say?
Now the question arises whether elections can be held before the scheduled time? According to the rules of the Election Commission, elections can be held any time six months before the end of the term of any state assembly. For this, the Election Commission does not need to take any special approval from the Parliament. This is the reason why the possibility of holding elections in November-December itself is being seriously considered to avoid the February-March conflict.
When is the tenure of the current UP Assembly ending?
The current term of the 18th Assembly of Uttar Pradesh ends on 14 May 2027. According to the rules of the Constitution, the election process should be completed before this date and a new government should be formed. Earlier, political pundits were assuming that votes would be cast in February-March 2027, but now this new twist of census has changed the entire equation. For this reason, preparations are now underway to blow the election bugle in the last months of the year 2026.
Severe cold and fog are also becoming a big hindrance
If the Election Commission chooses the month of January to hold early elections, then severe cold and dense fog in North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab could become a big problem. Due to low visibility, there is a lot of difficulty in the landing and take-off of helicopters of the leaders, due to which the election rallies and campaigning are badly affected.
On the contrary, the season of November and December is considered to be the best season for election campaigning and for people to come out and vote. Considering this weather pattern, the possibility of holding elections at the end of this year seems to be the highest.
There was a stir among political parties, Akhilesh alerted the workers
Even though the Central Government or the Election Commission has not yet issued any official statement on this, but internal political parties have changed their gears. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has given direct instructions to the leaders and workers in his recent meetings that the government can announce premature elections at any time, so get on the ground from now on and keep the preparations strong. SP claims that the people of the state are in a mood for complete change this time.
On the other hand, within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) too, intensive brainstorming and strategies are being made regarding the situation of early elections. BJP feels that the positive environment created by the recent elections can directly benefit them in UP and Uttarakhand.
Congress and Mayawati’s BSP also entered the race
Amidst this murmur, SP’s ally Congress has also intensified the search for possible candidates and has started meetings in different divisions. On the other hand, BSP supremo Mayawati is also in no mood to sit quietly; She is continuously holding review meetings of the organization and has started selecting candidates. Experts say that if elections are held ahead of time in Uttar Pradesh, then it will not be limited to UP only, but elections will have to be held simultaneously in all the five states where elections are scheduled early next year.
