In fact, according to the current ICC rules, Afghanistan is not included in the nine teams that participate in the World Test Championship. This means that points from matches played with this Asian country are not counted in the rankings. Additionally, a WTC series requires at least two Test matches, due to which this lone Test match automatically falls out of the points system. In such a situation, BCCI has decided to rest many senior multi-format stars like Jasprit Bumrah and experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for this series.
However, many new faces will be desperate to make their mark against Afghanistan. These include the names of left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, fast bowler Gurnoor Brar and all-rounder Harsh Dubey. For Afghanistan, on the other hand, this match is a rare opportunity to test their progress against one of the strongest Test playing teams in the world. This match is taking place exactly eight years after Afghanistan played its historic first Test match against India in Bengaluru in 2018.
