Palghar’s third mountain tunnel construction completed for bullet train

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project has achieved another important milestone in Maharashtra. The construction work of the third mountain tunnel (MT-07) under the project has been successfully completed. The Railway Ministry informed on Tuesday (June 2) that this tunnel has been built near Ambesari village of Dahanu tehsil of Palghar district of Maharashtra.

According to the ministry, the tunnel is 417 meters long and 14.4 meters wide and is equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring and security systems for high-speed bullet train operations. The country’s first bullet train project has got a new impetus with the completion of the construction of three mountain tunnels in Palghar district within just five months.

The Railway Ministry statement said that to develop both lines of the Bullet Train Corridor, this tunnel was excavated from both ends through controlled drilling and blasting technology. Advanced engineering techniques and safety standards were strictly followed during construction.

State-of-the-art monitoring systems and geotechnical equipment were used to ensure structural stability, worker safety and precise execution throughout the construction work. Vibrations, tunnel movements and surrounding structures were continuously monitored with the help of real-time monitoring systems such as Surface Settlement Points (SSP), 3D targets, strain gauges and seismographs.

Additionally, there was no compromise on worker safety related systems such as ventilation systems, fire protection systems, controlled entry and continuous geotechnical monitoring during tunnel construction.

The Railway Ministry said that this achievement builds on the success of the tunnel projects already completed in Maharashtra. The construction of the 1.5 km long first mountain tunnel (MT-05) in Saphale area of Palghar district was completed on 2 January 2026. This was the first successful mountain tunnel of the bullet train project in Maharashtra.

After this, the construction of the second tunnel (MT-06) was completed on 3 February 2026. This 454 meter long tunnel was excavated through the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Thus the construction of two tunnels in Palghar district was completed within just one month.

Of the seven mountain tunnels under construction in Maharashtra, excavation of MT-05, MT-06 and MT-07 has been completed. Whereas the excavation of MT-08 (350 meters) was completed only on 5 October 2023. Work on MT-03 is more than 80 percent complete, while MT-04 is approximately 60 percent complete. Work on MT-01 and MT-02 is also going on at a fast pace.

Of the total eight mountain tunnels of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project, seven are located in Palghar district of Maharashtra and one in Valsad district of Gujarat. The construction of the tunnel in Valsad district has already been completed.

According to the ministry, the excavation of all three mountain tunnels located between Vapi and Boisar bullet train stations has been successfully completed. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor passes through major industrial areas like Boisar in Maharashtra and Vapi in Gujarat, where construction work is progressing rapidly. This section consists of three mountain tunnels namely MT-08, MT-07 and MT-06.
