It has been said that Pahlaj was suffering from liver issues. There has been a wave of mourning in the film industry due to the news of Pahlaj Nihalani’s demise. Everyone is bidding him farewell with tearful eyes. His age was 76 years.

The tenure of the censor board was controversial
Pahlaj was the chairperson of the Censor Board between 2015 and 2017. During his tenure as chairperson, there were controversies regarding censorship and film certification of many films. Pahlaj’s decisions had sparked debate in the film industry. The dispute between the makers and Pahlaj was greatly highlighted during the censorship of the movie Udta Punjab. Due to being surrounded by controversy, in 2017, Pahlaj was removed from the chairmanship of the Censor Board and replaced by ad-man Prasoon Joshi. After being removed from the Censor Board, Pahlaj was the distributor and producer of the 2017 erotic film Julie 2.
As a producer, Pahlaj had made many commercial Hindi films. Pahlaj started his career as a producer with the 1982 film Hathkadi. After this he gave films like Aankhen, Shola Aur Shabnam, Andaz, Paap Ki Duniya, Talaash, Rangeela Raja to the industry. It was Pahlaj who made the career of Govinda and Chunky Pandey by giving them a big break in Bollywood. Govinda’s Rangeela was Raja Pahlaj’s last film as a producer. This movie flopped badly at the box office.
Pahlaj was also the President of ‘Motion Pictures and TV Program Producers Association’ (AMPTPP) from 1980 to 2009.
