In the month of June, BCCI will announce the new T20 captain of Team India, because the Indian team has to play T20 series on Ireland and New Zealand tour. Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Verma and Ishan Kishan are in the race for T20 captaincy, but Shreyas Iyer is at the forefront. It is believed that Iyer can be given the responsibility of T20I captaincy. Although nothing is official yet, only media reports are coming out. If we look at the way Shreyas Iyer has captained in the IPL, he can prove to be a good captain for Team India as well. Let us know in this article why Iyer should be made the T20 captain of the Indian team…

Shreyas Iyer has the skill to groom the youth.

Shreyas Iyer has proved to be a superhit so far with his captaincy in IPL. Whichever team he captained, either reached the finals or became the champion. Iyer now has a lot of captaincy experience in T20 cricket. Under his captaincy, Iyer has given freedom to young talents to play freely. Iyer has the ability to get the best performance from young players and take right decisions in pressure situations. He also has a deep talent in improving the youth. He knows very well how to get the best performance from the young players, which is very important for building the future of Team India.

Shreyas Iyer handles the team’s innings under pressure

Shreyas Iyer is also an excellent batsman. He comes in the middle order and handles the innings and also finishes when needed. He bats at number 4 or 5. Iyer bats brilliantly against spinners and scores runs quickly. Indian T20 team needs such a captain, so along with captaincy, he can handle the team in batting as well and score runs.

Delhi Capitals reached the finals

Shreyas Iyer has captained in 127 T20 matches so far. In IPL, he is captaining Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and now Punjab Kings. Iyer became the captain of Delhi Capitals in the year 2018. Under his captaincy, Delhi Capitals was successful in making it to the playoffs for two consecutive seasons. In the year 2019, Delhi Capitals reached the playoffs after 6 years, where they had to face defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator. After this, in the year 2020, Delhi Capitals had reached the finals, in which they lost against Mumbai Indians. Shreyas Iyer captained Delhi Capitals in 41 matches, out of which the team won 23 matches and lost 18.

KKR became champion under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer

After this Shreyas Iyer became a part of Kolkata Knight Riders in the year 2022. Under the captaincy of Iyer, KKR performed brilliantly and won the title in IPL 2024. Shreyas Iyer has captained Kolkata Knight Riders in 30 matches, out of which KKR has won 17 matches. Whereas it has faced defeat in 11 matches.

Punjab Kings reached the final

After leaving KKR, Shreyas Iyer joined Punjab Kings in IPL 2025. Iyer again repeated the history and in the same season 2025 itself, after 11 years, he took Punjab Kings straight to the finals. However, had to face defeat against RCB in the final. This season in IPL 2026 too, under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings made a great start and won 6 consecutive matches, but due to various reasons the team faltered later and could not make it to the playoffs. However, still Iyer has been included in the list of most successful captains in IPL. Iyer has captained in more than 90 matches in IPL and his win percentage has been excellent.

Ishan Kishan also included in the race for captaincy

Ishan Kishan is also in the race for T20 captaincy of Team India. Ishaan has had a great performance in T20. He bats fearlessly and gives a fast start to the team. His T20 strike rate has also been 144.97. However, Ishaan does not have much captaincy experience yet. He has captained in 36 T20 matches so far. All these matches have been limited to local tournaments and India-A. Although Ishan captained Sunrisers Hyderabad in the absence of Pat Cummins at the beginning of IPL 2026 and the team performed well, but compared to Shreyas, he does not have much experience of captaining in high-pressure IPL or international knockout matches.

Tilak Verma is also an option

Tilak Verma is considered the future star of Team India. Tilak is an explosive batsman and has the ability to play in any situation. Although he does not have that much captaincy experience. He has captained only 18 T20 matches so far. In the current circumstances, it would be premature to hand over the responsibility of captaincy to him. Now it remains to be seen which player BCCI makes the captain of T20, but one thing is clear that the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav is going to go.
