Mumbai, June 4. Shreyas Iyer, who performed well as captain for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the last season of Tata Indian Premier League (IPL-19), will become the next T20 International captain of the Indian cricket team. He will replace Suryakumar Yadav, who was the captain of the World Cup winning team. Whereas Tilak Verma has been made the deputy of Shreyas.
Sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gave this information on Thursday night. Sources said chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir and the selection committee have agreed to appoint Iyer as the T20 International captain, while Tilak Verma will be the vice-captain.
Formal announcement will be made in the selection committee meeting on June 6.
Although India’s T20 International captaincy was not discussed in the BCCI Apex Council meeting on Thursday, but according to sources, top officials of the board have agreed to appoint Iyer as the captain and Verma as the vice-captain. It is being told that Iyer can also attend the selection committee meeting to be held on June 6. The Indian team for the tour of Ireland and England will be announced on the same day.
Surya has not been able to perform anything special with the bat in recent months.
It is noteworthy that under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian team won the ICC T20 World Cup for the third time in March this year. India successfully retained their title and became the first team to defend the T20 World Cup trophy. However, Suryakumar’s performance with the bat was average, scoring 242 runs in nine matches. Surya also had a mediocre performance in IPL 2026 and could score only 270 runs for Mumbai Indians (MI) as the five-time former champion team slipped to ninth place in the points table.
