After this both of them appealed against their punishment. The defense had argued that there were shortcomings in the prosecution’s story and the judge’s decision was unjust. After hearing both the sides, two judges rejected the appeal on Wednesday (June 03, 2026). According to English-language Pakistani news outlet ‘Dawn’, the prosecution had argued that there was strong evidence against both the accused. In such a situation, it would be unfair to postpone the death penalty.

Let us tell you here that Abid Malhi and Shafqat Ali attacked on 9 September 2020 when the woman and her three children were stuck on the motorway going out of Lahore because their car had run out of fuel. After this, while waiting for help, the woman closed the doors of the car from inside. Despite this, the attackers broke the window and dragged him out. After this, they gang-raped her at gunpoint in front of her frightened children.

Before absconding after raping the woman, the accused Abid Malhi and Shafqat Ali had also looted the woman’s money, jewelery and bank cards. Police said that the woman was deeply shocked by this incident, but she managed to give some initial information about the attackers. With the help of the victim’s statements and mobile phone data, he was traced and arrested a few days after the incident.

DNA samples matched in the investigation

At the same time, during the police investigation, the DNA samples taken from the crime scene matched his sample. During the hearing, the victim identified both the men. After this Shafqat Ali confessed his crime before a magistrate. To ensure a speedy trial of the case, its trial was conducted in an anti-terrorism court in 2021.

The police officer had held the woman responsible

It is noteworthy that after this incident, large scale protests took place across Pakistan. The surprising thing is that the next day after the attack, a senior Lahore police officer Omar Shaikh came in front of the media and said in gestures that the woman was also responsible to some extent for this incident.
