India’s Transition Challenge Ahead of WTC Glory Quest

India’s hunt for their first-ever World Test Championship title enters a defining phase in the 2025-27 cycle, but the road ahead is paved with uncertainty as the team navigates a significant generational transition.

The retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket in 2025 left a massive void. Shubman Gill, appointed Test captain in May 2025, has since been tasked with leading a rebuild.

His first assignment, a five-match series in England, yielded a hard-fought 2-2 draw, a creditable result for a side still finding its feet. However, a 0-2 home whitewash against South Africa exposed the fragility of this new-look India.

India have reached the WTC final twice, losing to New Zealand in 2021 and Australia in 2023, and the trophy remains the one glaring gap in their cabinet. Analyst Aakash Chopra summed it up best: “Since we are going through a transition, you cannot bullishly say India will qualify, but I consider them a strong contender.”

With home series against Australia, West Indies, and South Africa still to come, along with a gruelling Border-Gavaskar Trophy in January 2027, India’s WTC fate is far from decided. The talent is undeniable, Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah form a formidable core. Whether this transitional side can finally lift the WTC mace remains the burning question of Indian cricket.
