India-Bangladesh Border Tension: Heavy tension increased on India-Bangladesh border, relations deteriorated due to allegations of forced infiltration

There has been a sudden increase in bitterness and military alertness on the international border between India and Bangladesh. The long standing border issues between the two neighboring countries have once again taken a new and serious form. The Bangladesh government and its Border Security Force have claimed to have foiled at least 10 major attempts by Indian security forces to forcibly push civilians across the border in the last 24 hours. After this incident, an alert has been issued on this sensitive international border which is more than 4,000 kilometers long and has very complex geographical conditions.

Along with increasing the security on the international border, ‘Border Guard Bangladesh’ (BGB) has issued a strong statement saying that any kind of illegal activity or infiltration on the border will not be tolerated at all. BGB has said in its official claim that recently, on the border with Jhenaidah district of Bangladesh, Indian security forces had tried to force about 30 to 35 people to cross the border by loading them in vehicles and vans, which was completely foiled by the alert Bangladeshi soldiers. After this incident, patrolling has been intensified in the border areas of both the countries.

Relations suffered a big blow after Sheikh Hasina’s departure, India’s border states took a tough stance

Efforts were on to bring diplomatic relations between the two countries back on track after the huge political upheaval in Bangladesh in the year 2024 and the removal from power of the then pro-India Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, this latest controversy has in a way ruined all those efforts for reform. In major states sharing the border with India, such as West Bengal, Tripura and Assam, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has adopted a very strict and zero-tolerance stance against illegal infiltrators. On the other hand, the Dhaka administration clearly says that if any citizen is to be repatriated, it should be done only through proper legal and established diplomatic procedures of both the countries and not by forcibly pushing them across the borders.

It is believed that after the recent tension on the border and these serious allegations of infiltration, this high level meeting can see a very sharp and heated debate between the two sides, where India will put forward its security concerns and Bangladesh will raise strong questions on the claims of these alleged pushbacks.
