The injury occurred during the IPL final
Virat Kohli suffered a hamstring injury during the IPL final in Ahmedabad on 31 May. Kohli was struggling while batting in the final match against Gujarat Titans. Hence, there were already question marks on his playing in the upcoming series. After a medical examination, Kohli has been advised complete rest. According to media reports, Kohli may take approximately 6 weeks to get fully fit. So it became clear that he will not play in the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.
While announcing the squad for the T20I series against Ireland and England, Saikia confirmed that Kohli will not be able to play against Afghanistan. Saikia said that Yashasvi Jaiswal has been replaced by Kohli in the team. Yashasvi is also part of the Indian squad for the one-off Test match.
Regarding Virat Kohli’s fitness, chief selector Ajigarkar said, ‘It is not possible to say how much time Virat will take to recover from the injury. However, we hope he will be fit for the upcoming ODI series against England.’

A chance to prove himself to Jaiswal
In Virat’s absence, this will be a big chance for Yassavi Jaiswal to prove himself. Yashasvi has played four ODIs for India so far and has scored 171 runs. Interestingly, Yashasvi made his ODI debut against England last year in place of the injured Virat Kohli. Now he has once again been given an opportunity to replace Kohli.
Series schedule
The ODI series between India and Afghanistan will start from June 13, and the first match will be played in Dharamsala. After this, the next two matches will be played in Lucknow and Chennai on June 17 and 20. Before the ODI series, a single Test match is also being played at Mullanpur from June 6.
