Breaking: Suryakumar Yadav lost captaincy, Shreyas is new T20 captain; Vaibhav Suryavanshi is the youngest Indian cricketer to be selected
Shreyas Iyer was made the new T20 captain of India. He replaces Suryakumar Yadav, who was also dropped from the team for the Ireland and England series to be held in July. 15 year old Vaibhav Suryavanshi was also included in the team, who got a chance in the senior team for the first time. Vaibhav is the youngest cricketer to be selected in Team India. Vaibhav’s age is 15 years 71 days. He has been selected in the Indian team for the T20 series against Ireland and England in June-July. Apart from this, Vaibh was also included in the Asian Games squad.
The selectors are focusing on preparing the team for the Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup. The tour of Ireland and England is India’s first T20 series after successfully defending the T20 World Cup trophy under the captaincy of Suryakumar (35) in March. However, he will be 38 years old by the next T20 World Cup to be held in 2028. The debate over his place started after he had an average performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup (242 runs in 9 innings at a strike rate of 136.72) and a poor performance in IPL 2026 (only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54).

Shreyas returns to T20 team after almost 3 years
His replacement Shreyas (31 years) has not played any International T20 since December 2023, as he could not get a place in the team due to Suryakumar and Tilak Verma being in the middle-order. Shreyas was recently included in the team as a replacement for an injured player during the home T20 series against New Zealand in January, but he did not play any matches as India gave priority to players who were going to play in the T20 World Cup later in the year. However, Shreyas proved his captaincy ability.

Shreyas proved his captaincy in IPL
He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and led Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to finals in 2020 and 2025. He scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175 in IPL 2025 and 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81 in IPL 2026.
Vaibhav is the youngest cricketer to be selected in the Indian team.
At the same time, after scoring 776 runs at a strike rate of 237 in a spectacular IPL season, Suryavanshi has become the youngest player to be selected in the Indian men’s team since Sachin Tendulkar in the late 1980s. Ahead of the T20I tour of Ireland and England, Suryavanshi will play for India A in the tri-series in Sri Lanka (which also includes Afghanistan) from June 9 to 21.
Vaibhav broke Shefali Verma’s record
Vaibhav broke the record of female cricketer Shefali Verma in terms of youngest age on the day of being selected for the first time in the Indian team. Earlier, Shefali was the youngest player to be selected for the Indian team in both men’s and women’s categories. When Shefali got a chance in Team India for the first time, she was 15 years, 220 days old. At the same time, this record in men’s cricket was in the name of Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin came to Team India at the age of 16 years, 194 days.
