Axar Patel reveals funny IPL moment with Ashutosh Sharma
New Delhi: India all-rounder and Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel recently shared a humorous incident from the Indian Premier League that left both teammates and support staff in splits during a tense match situation. The anecdote, involving young batter Ashutosh Sharma and the team’s physiotherapist, has since caught the attention of fans for its unexpected comic timing.
Speaking during an interaction on the Humans of Bombay YouTube channel, Axar recounted the moment that took place when Ashutosh Sharma was struck on the helmet while batting. As per standard cricket safety protocols, play was briefly halted and the team physio rushed onto the field to assess the player’s condition.
However, what followed was far from routine.
Before the physiotherapist could even ask a question regarding his well-being, Ashutosh responded with an unusual and completely unrelated statement: “Yes bro, I am virgin.” The unexpected reply left the physio momentarily stunned and then laughing uncontrollably, along with the player himself.
Axar revealed that the physio later narrated the incident to him, still amused by what had transpired on the field. “Craig couldn’t ask anything after that. Both of them just laughed and he came back,” Axar said during the interview. He further described Ashutosh Sharma as someone with a naturally funny personality who can lighten the mood even in high-pressure situations.
Light moment in a high-pressure tournament
The IPL is known for its intense competition and high-pressure moments, where players are expected to perform under significant scrutiny. Injuries, especially blows to the helmet, are treated with utmost seriousness due to the potential risks involved. In such scenarios, medical staff are trained to follow strict protocols to ensure player safety.
Ashutosh’s humorous response, therefore, stood out as an unusual moment that broke the tension on the field. While the incident did not impact the match outcome, it highlighted the lighter side of the game and the camaraderie within the team.
Such moments often remain behind the scenes but occasionally come to light through player interactions, offering fans a glimpse into the human side of professional cricket.
Delhi Capitals’ performance under scrutiny
Despite these light-hearted incidents, Delhi Capitals had a challenging season in the IPL. Under Axar Patel’s leadership, the team failed to qualify for the playoffs for the second consecutive year. They finished fifth in IPL 2025 and slipped further to sixth place in the following season.
The team’s campaign was marked by inconsistency, particularly in the batting department. While senior batter KL Rahul delivered a strong individual performance with over 500 runs in the season, the lack of support from other players affected the team’s overall results.
The middle order struggled to build partnerships, and the side often lacked the firepower required to chase or set competitive totals. This imbalance in the batting lineup became a recurring issue throughout the tournament.
Bowling concerns and missing balance
Delhi Capitals also faced challenges in their bowling unit. The absence of Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc during the first half of the competition weakened the attack significantly. His experience and ability to deliver in crucial moments were sorely missed.
Additionally, leading spinner Kuldeep Yadav had an underwhelming season, failing to make the expected impact. South African pacer Lungi Ngidi showed glimpses of form but could not carry the bowling unit on his own.
The lack of depth and consistency in both batting and bowling departments contributed to the team’s inability to progress further in the tournament.
Looking ahead
With two consecutive seasons ending outside the playoff positions, Delhi Capitals are expected to reassess their strategy ahead of the next IPL edition. Discussions around leadership, team composition, and player roles are likely to take centre stage in the coming months.
While performances on the field remain the primary focus, moments like the one shared by Axar Patel serve as a reminder of the camaraderie and spirit within the team. Such instances not only provide entertainment but also highlight the importance of maintaining a positive environment in high-stakes competitions.
As the franchise looks to rebuild and return stronger, balancing performance with team morale will be crucial in shaping their future campaigns.
