After the West Bengal Assembly elections, the noose of law is continuously tightening on many goons and leaders of Trinamool Congress (TMC). On Saturday (June 6), Kailash Mishra, close to the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and president of Howrah Sadar Trinamool Youth Congress, was arrested from Bihar. On the same day, former TMC MLA from Medinipur Sujoy Hazra was also taken into custody by the police in the land scam case.
According to Howrah City Police, a case has been registered against Kailash Mishra under several non-bailable sections including extortion, assault, obstructing government work and threatening. He was absconding after his defeat in the assembly elections.
Kailash Mishra had contested from Bali seat in the 26th Assembly elections, but was defeated by BJP candidate Sanjay Kumar Singh by a margin of about 12 thousand votes. He was not seen in public since the election results were declared on May 4.
After the police received a tip-off, a team of Howrah City Police raided the house of one of his relatives in Madhubani district of Bihar, from where he was arrested. According to police sources, he will be produced in Bihar court on Sunday, after which he will be brought to Howrah on Monday on transit remand.
Kailash Mishra has been counted among the influential leaders of the party in Howrah Sadar area and is considered close to Abhishek Banerjee.
After the assembly elections, action has been taken against many TMC leaders in different parts of the state. Police are continuously investigating after allegations of money recovery and extortion came to light in different cases.
Meanwhile, former TMC MLA from Medinipur Sujoy Hazra has also been arrested in a land scam case. According to Shalbani police station, he was in hiding for several days and was allegedly trying to escape on Saturday.
The police were keeping an eye on his activities and finally he was arrested from Kharagpur railway station. According to sources, he is being interrogated further in the matter.
These continuous arrests have created new political challenges for the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. Opposition parties are raising questions on the state government and the ruling party regarding these matters, while the investigating agencies are continuing action at their level.
