Summer Hair Care: How to protect hair from damage in pool party and beach vacation, note this swim proof routine

As temperatures rise in the summer season, people are turning to swimming pools, pool parties and beach vacations to get relief. This is the best season for having fun, but our hair has to bear the brunt of it. The chemicals present in water and the scorching sun together completely spoil the health of the hair.

Why does hair get damaged during swimming?

The chlorine used to keep pool water clean, the salty ocean water (salt) and the sun’s strong UV rays make our hair dry, weak and frizzy. UV rays damage the outer protective layer of the hair i.e. cuticles, due to which the hair directly gets damaged. Due to prolonged exposure to sunlight and chemical water, hair loses its natural moisture, due to which it starts breaking and its color also starts fading.

Prepare swim proof hair routine with these easy hacks

If you want to keep your hair protected during vacation or pool sessions, follow this simple routine:

  • Sun Protection: Whenever you go out in the sun, use a wide-brimmed hat or cotton scarf to protect your hair from direct sunlight. Hair sunscreen or UV protection spray available in the market is also a good option.
  • Deep Conditioning Mask: It is important to apply a deep conditioning mask to your hair both before and after getting into the swimming pool or ocean. This mask creates a protective layer over the hair, due to which chlorine or salt water cannot penetrate inside the hair.
  • Pre-rinse with clean water: Just before getting into the pool, thoroughly wet hair with clean tap water. Dry hair is like a sponge which quickly absorbs water containing chemicals. If the hair is already wet with clean water, it will absorb less of the chlorinated water.

Expert Statement

“Chlorine and hard water completely strip the hair of its natural oils. Even while on vacation, you should carry a good hydrating hair mask, sulphate-free shampoo and hair oil with you so that your hair can get quick recovery.”

Hair care after vacation

Wash hair with sulfate-free shampoo immediately after you finish swimming to remove chlorine residues. After this, apply conditioner and let the hair dry in natural air. Avoid using blow dryers, straighteners, or any kind of heating tools until your hair has completely healed.
