Maruti Grand Vitara, Victoris, Toyota Hyryder Together Ahead Of Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta
The mid-size SUV segment is one of the most competitive in the country. The segment is growing rapidly, and it is one of those categories where almost every brand has at least one product. The Hyundai Creta is the SUV that made this segment popular. However, we now have reports suggesting that Maruti Suzuki and Toyota together have overtaken the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta in sales for the month of May 2026. Let’s take a look at the numbers for better clarity.
Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are partners, and they jointly developed the Grand Vitara and Hyryder SUVs. Last year, Maruti launched the Invicto SUV, which is also based on the same platform as the other two SUVs.

In the month of May, Maruti Suzuki sold 9,366 units of the Grand Vitara in India. Toyota, on the other hand, sold 8,664 units of the Hyryder. Maruti also sold 10,853 units of the Invicto in the market last month. Combined, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota sold a total of 28,883 units of these SUVs in the market during May.
Hyundai is the second-largest car manufacturer in the country, and the Creta is the SUV that defined this segment. The brand is currently working on the next-generation Creta, which is expected to be launched next year.
In May, Hyundai sold 15,253 units of the current-generation Creta. Coming to Kia, which launched the new-generation Seltos earlier this year, the company managed to sell 10,597 units of the SUV last month. The combined total comes to 25,850 units. In short, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota jointly sold over 3,000 units more than Hyundai and Kia combined.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Invicto, and Toyota Hyryder, as mentioned above, are based on the same platform. They are powered by the same set of engine options, and all these models have one advantage over the Creta and Seltos. They are available with both strong-hybrid and mild-hybrid powertrains that offer excellent fuel efficiency.
These SUVs are powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that generates 101 bhp and 139 Nm of torque. It is available with both manual and automatic transmission options. The automatic version even gets AWD as an option. The strong-hybrid version uses a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder hybrid powertrain that generates 114 bhp and 141 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with an e-CVT gearbox.

Coming to the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, the former is a generation behind the latter. However, both SUVs are powered by the same set of petrol and diesel engine options. The SUVs come with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that is available with manual and IVT gearbox options. There is also a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that comes with iMT and DCT gearbox options. The diesel version is a 1.5-litre unit available with manual and automatic transmission options.
Hyundai and Kia are expected to launch strong-hybrid variants with their next-generation models. When that happens, they could potentially overtake Maruti Suzuki and Toyota in monthly sales, provided Hyundai and Kia get the pricing right.
