Century in Test, still out of 3 tours, BCCI’s shocking decision on Shubman Gill.

Indian cricket team’s star batsman Shubman Gill is in tremendous form these days. Gill, who took the team to the final under his captaincy in IPL 2026 and scored 732 runs in 16 innings, has also scored a brilliant century in the first innings of the Test match against Afghanistan. But on Saturday, when the Indian T20 squad for Ireland, England tour and Asian Games was announced, everyone was surprised by the absence of Shubman Gill’s name in it. Fans were continuously criticizing this decision on social media, but now the real and shocking reason behind it has come to light.

Why did BCCI not select Shubman Gill?
A big revelation has come to light regarding the selection committee not including Gill in the T20 team. A BCCI source said that Gill has not been dropped, rather he has been rested as per a special strategy. According to the source, “The selection committee has asked Shubman Gill to give priority to Test and ODI cricket till the ODI World Cup to be held in the year 2027. He is in excellent form, but the board wants him to remain completely fit and fresh for the upcoming big and important tournaments.”

Workload management is a big reason
The Indian team has a very busy schedule for the next 18 months. If Shubman Gill plays continuously in all three formats (Test, ODI and T20), it can cause extreme fatigue for him. If we look at the figures, before the 2027 ODI World Cup, India has to play at least 35 ODI matches and 9 World Test Championship matches. The board wants to retain Gill for the longer format. However, there are speculations that he may make a comeback in this shorter format before the Olympics and T20 World Cup to be held in 2028.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi gets a chance, Iyer becomes captain
It is noteworthy that this time many big changes have been seen in the T20 squad. Young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who won the Orange Cap by scoring the most runs in IPL 2026, has got a place in all three squads of the national team for the first time. Suryakumar Yadav, who is struggling with poor form, has been dropped from all three squads. In his place, BCCI has appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of the team, while Tilak Verma has been given the responsibility of vice-captain.
